Romance Suspense | Thriller Police Procedural | Suspense

I’m a self-proclaimed Laura Griffin lover. I’ve read all of her books and, like many of her fans, have eagerly awaited her newest release. FLIGHT is the second in the Texas Murder Files series and is the follow-up from the first book in the series, HIDDEN.

As someone who has read most of Laura’s novels and has reviewed similar romantic suspense releases, I can say that there were pros and cons to this work. I read HIDDEN pretty quickly and loved the third-person point-of-view spin. It sucked me in every time. In FLIGHT, we meet Miranda and Joel. Both are unique in their own ways, and it never ceases to surprise me how the characters manage to find themselves in such surprising situations.

Joel’s character sizzled right off the page. He was stubborn, rough, and manly. Miranda was also a great competitor for him, and his presence did not initially strike her. Probably not something he typically faced when encountering the opposite sex. Nonetheless, Miranda’s CSI photography expertise managed to secure her a role in Joel’s homicide investigation.

There was a third-person account in FLIGHT that added more intrigue to what was going on, as well as a potential romance subplot, but it left me with more questions and I wanted to see more from this perspective. There were also some connections that I didn't realize right away, that I think could have added more to the book if readers knew about them earlier. As we continue to read through the book, the background information starts to unfold, and unrelated events are suddenly important and will change the way relationships continue to grow.

FLIGHT by Laura Griffin kept me captivated. Compared to some of her other books, I didn’t feel connected to the plot. Don’t get me wrong, the writing was excellent and there were no editing issues that I saw. It was just not as intense as some of the previous books I had read.

Overall, FLIGHT is a good read if you’re looking for something to curl up with by the fireplace on a cold night. There’s enough heat, suspense, and romance to keep you warm.

SUMMARY

One tenacious local detective can only get the help he needs from a former forensic photographer with a serial killer on the loose in the new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.

When former forensic photographer Miranda Rhoads moves to the seaside town of Lost Beach, she's decided to make her living as a wildlife photographer and put crime scenes behind her. But her plans are quickly upended when one morning, she comes across a couple sleeping in a canoe, entwined in an embrace. Looking closer, she realizes the man and woman aren't asleep—they’ve been murdered.

Detective Joel Breda sets out to find answers--not only about the unidentified victims in the marshy death scene, but also about the aloof and beautiful photographer who seems to know more about his investigation than he does.

As they begin to unravel the motivation of a merciless serial killer, Miranda and Joel must race against the clock to make an arrest before the killer can find them first.
