I don’t know how I have time for anything other than reading when there’s a new book out by Brenda Novak. I truly covet each and every story by this amazing talent. Every book so far in the Silver Springs series has been an unqualified winner so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on UNTIL YOU LOVED ME which is book number three. Once again Brenda Novak captures your attention from the very start with her talent for weaving an engrossing tale and then keeps it by capturing your heart as well.
UNTIL YOU LOVED ME is about being caught between a rock and a hard place. Ellie had just discovered her fiancé Don in bed with Leo – a man that worked alongside them. It seemed Don wasn’t actually at golf outings all those times. Bad enough being jilted but any woman would feel diminished by this twist of events. Even a brilliant scientist like Ellie. Her one attempt to banish all memories of walking in on Don and Leo had repercussions she could never have anticipated. Seems birth control wasn’t as effective as Ellie had counted on.
Taking a moment here to give the author Brenda Novak kudos for creating Ellie – a scientist working at a lab whose goal was creating a cure for diabetes through immunology. All Novak fans know this is an issue near and dear to her.
Hard not to love Ellie. She is so utterly devoted to her career that this unplanned pregnancy totally surprises everyone that knows her. Ellie is the consummate good girl. Ellie’s job takes up all her time leaving little or none for anything even remotely extracurricular. But her friend Amy takes up the cause. Good intentions and all.
And you are going to hate Don and Leo not for who they are but for who they are. But even Don has his moments albeit late coming and few. Believe me it will make sense once you get immersed in this amazing joyous story.
UNTIL YOU LOVED ME is the coming together of two forces of nature, Ellie and Hudson. Each totally committed to their careers. Hudson is a pro football star making megabucks and seemingly having the time of his life. But his life is becoming tiresome. Sort of the bloom is off the rose. Hudson isn’t consciously looking for anything to spice up his life. Actually spice isn’t what Hudson needs. Ellie is. Ellie is unassuming and pretty naïve when it comes to anything current. Her conversation centers on her work. Believe it or not, that’s what Hudson finds so wonderful about this woman. But there is still an element of doubt as to whether or not he can trust Ellie. After all who hasn’t heard of Hudson or seen his photo. He is big sporting news. Ellie does not do sports. And Hudson’s past gives him little experience with trusting anyone. It’s actually his past that has been a troubling source of that trust.
Ellie and Hudson are considering some sort of arrangement after determining that (1) Ellie is pregnant and (2) Hudson is the sperm donor and (3) they live on the opposite coast. Yes, Gracie, condoms don’t always work and Ellie can cite the statistics. As long as hearts aren’t involved both Ellie and Hudson figure their plan will work just fine. This entire arrangement is a huge leap of faith for both these fabulous people.
UNTIL YOU LOVED ME has some interesting twists and turns. Brenda Novak infuses quite a bit of heart in the development of the two main characters. Something commonly found in all the Silver Springs series. Great characters chasing down their own personal demons. Good people with caring hearts. UNTIL YOU LOVED ME is a great choice for a summer read. I guarantee you will find Ellie just charming and even though Hudson is at times rough around the edges he too will win you over.
SUMMARY
New York Times bestselling author Brenda
Novak returns to Silver Springs
Sometimes starting over means finding everything you've
been missing…
After catching her fiancé cheating—with another man—usually
straitlaced, workaholic scientist Ellie Fisher liberates her
wild side just long enough to indulge in a passionate
one-night stand with a tall, dark stranger she meets at a
trendy Miami bar. Embarrassed by her recklessness, she ducks
out the following morning without learning the guy's full
name, something that shouldn't have been a problem…until a
pregnancy test turns positive.
Being a professional football player, Hudson King has always
been cautious around women. But this one had been
different—so disinterested in his celebrity, so convincingly
into him. When Ellie tracks him down, claiming
she's carrying his baby, he's stunned. And more than a
little betrayed.
But after growing up as an orphan, he'll do anything to stay
involved in his child's life, so he urges Ellie to move to
Silver Springs, where they can co-parent. Hudson has a lot
of love to give, certainly enough for his child, and when
their initial spark reignites, perhaps for Ellie, too…
