Lady Honora (Nora) Parker is an English beauty and daughter of Earl of Stratton. Nora has a secret relationship with Robert, a poor, starving, no-future artist she wants to marry. Knowing her father will never agree to this, she arranges to be found with Robert in a compromising position during a dinner party where her father and his friends intrude. and discover them together. Nora is immediately banished by her father to live with her aunt Bea and Uncle James Cortland in New York City. It is 1890, the Golden Age in a city that promises excitement and perhaps an American who would be worthy of his beautiful daughter?
Nora is not content living with her Aunt and Uncle and immediately devises a scheme that will force her father to welcome her back home so that she and Robert can marry. She will find the most outlandish man with a reputation as a womanizer and ask him to pretend to become "engaged" to her. Her choice is Julius Hatcher,a handsome and very wealthy bachelor who lives to have fun, has a mistress and never plans to marry and have a family. The night she meets him at Sherry's, one of New York's finest restaurants, he is having a birthday party for himself, while he and 20 of his BFF's ride horses while drunk on the second floor above where Nora is dining. He is the most gorgeous looking man Nora has ever seen and he charms her completely. Nora makes her proposal to him and he accepts. He then tells her of his vendetta to find the men responsible for his father committing suicide when the market fell. Nora agrees to help him. They are in agreement until Julius falls off his horse and passes out. But they have agreed to become "engaged.", and their adventure begins.
A DARING ARRANGEMENT is a delicious delight. Nora is a sassy, sexy and smart heroine who will never take NO for an answer. She matures nicely as she becomes romantically involved with Julius. He shows her how to have fun, sneaks her into the stock exchange, is always the perfect protector and can he kiss! Their chemistry flares, and their banter is truly hysterical. I loved them together!. As their affection grows stronger, Julius satisfies his vendetta, it is time to face the future. Can they have one together?
A colorful cast of characters that include wise Aunt Bea who knows how to keep secrets while skillfully aiding the attraction between Nora and Julius. The relationship between Julius and his selfish, cold mother is sad to watch but in the end Nora steps in and handles it perfectly. This is a sweet read, hard to put aside and the ending pure joy. A grand slam for author, Joanna Shupe. It is everything I love in a historical romance and so much more. I look forward to the sequel.
Set in New York City's Gilded Age, Joanna Shupe's Avon
debut introduces an English beauty with a wicked scheme to
win the man she loves--and the American scoundrel who ruins
her best laid plans...
Lady Honora Parker must get engaged as soon as possible, and
only a particular type of man will do. Nora seeks a mate so
abhorrent, so completely unacceptable, that her father will
reject the match--leaving her free to marry the artist she
loves. Who then is the most appalling man in Manhattan? The
wealthy, devilishly handsome financier, Julius Hatcher, of
course....
Julius is intrigued by Nora's ruse and decides to play
along. But to Nora's horror, Julius transforms himself into
the perfect fiancé, charming the very people she hoped he
would offend. It seems Julius has a secret plan all his
own--one that will solve a dark mystery from his past, and
perhaps turn him into the kind of man Nora could truly love.
