Laurie Morgan has her own TV show called Under Suspicion. Laurie and her group, Ryan, Grace and Jerry, take on cases to try and prove someone is innocent. The show gets very high ratings whenever they take on a new case. This time the case involves a wealthy woman, Virginia, who was found dead during a gala after possibly falling off the balcony.
The family feels even though the police have ruled this death a suicide that their mother's lover Ivan was involved. They reason that he is much younger than their mom, and she has been giving him a lot of money to start up his own business. The police cannot pin this on Ivan. So Laurie and her crew start to interview the family and friends of Virginia. According to Ivan, Virginia and he were going to get married, and she was changing her will. Not to give him the money but to leave almost all of it to charity. Virginia has always felt the children need to earn their own money and not rely on her money.
The more that Laurie investigates she sees a lot of missing facts from the family. One she has some doubts about is a nephew, Thomas. Thomas claims that he gets along with with his aunt, but after more digging, Laurie finds he is upset about not getting a lot of money from the will. Laurie also finds out that Virginia never had a chance to change her will, so the money and business did go to her children.
While going through all this Laurie is still trying to deal with her break up from Alex. Laurie really cared for him, as did her father and son. Alex wanted to know where he stands in life, but Laurie isn't ready to completely commit to him. So on with the investigation. So did Virginia fall off the balcony or was she pushed?
Mary Higgins Clark has been one of my favorite authors for years. I think I have probably read all of her books. This one didn't disappoint me at all. I also want to give credit to Alafair Burke, who wrote this book with Clark. The way these two write this book is great. I love this type of story, it keeps me guessing until the end. Clark and Burke get you right into the storyline. I started it and finished it in one day.
I also enjoyed the way that Clark and Burke described Laurie's relationship with her father and son, and of course with Alex. Hopefully, there will be more of these relationships in the next books.
