Lorna Doria was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Having witnessed a murder she becomes a state witness and under the protection of undercover cop Andrew Trudeau. Lorna cannot help being a WITNESS TO DEATH, but she can be unhappy being a prisoner. The last thing Andrew expects is to fall for the witness and though he tries to be professional the attraction is stronger than either expects. Can he keep her alive? Or will his feelings and hers distract him too much?
WITNESS TO DEATH is a 1985 re-release which certainly explains a lot to me. I am a big fan of author Heather Graham, but a recent one so I noticed that this offering does not have the flow of her later writing. The time period feels off, not modern yet not historical, and the characters are not Ms. Graham's usually strong ones. That said, the storyline is intriguing as you wonder what you might feel if you were suddenly scooped up and your life put in chaos for something you happen to see. Lorna was expected to give up her life and stay hidden. It wasn't so bad when her attraction to Andrew began but when he pulled back she wasn't happy and, understandably, becomes angry with the whole situation. As I said, Lorna is not the strongest character Ms. Graham has offered readers, but she is still relatable in being not happy with her current existence.
WITNESS TO DEATH does bring back a number of memories of the 80s: a lot of cigarettes smoked, Andrew also calls Lorna an "airhead" a number of times, and other phrases and words used throughout. There are some cute moments that deal with George, the body-guarding police dog. He was adorable and his bravery is shown when he takes a bullet for his humans and survives, though his police days are over. He becomes a pampered pet to his humans, so a happy ending there.
As I stated earlier, being an 80s re-release dated this book somewhat but it was still a good suspenseful novel, with a nice romance, interesting characters, and enough drama and danger to keep readers well entertained.
According to Publishers Weekly, "Graham stands at
the top of the romantic suspense category," and fans will be
eager to read this early, nail-biting tale of romantic
suspense that pairs a witness in a high-profile murder case
and her protection officer from this acclaimed New York
Times and USA Today bestselling author.
Lorna Doria hadn't committed a murder. She'd seen one. Yet
somehow she'd become the prisoner, while the killer was out
on bail. As state's witness, she'd thought the shelter of
her quiet New England life would be enough to keep her safe.
Law enforcement disagreed--and it was New York City
undercover cop Andrew Trudeau's job to protect her. But
their strong attraction had already made it too late for
that...
Now, with Andrew as her bodyguard, Lorna
has no choice but to accept his constant presence. She
assures herself she can handle it, she's mature, not easily
rattled--except by Andrew. They're as different as can be,
yet something bonds them, something beyond the danger they
face. But as a cop, Andrew's life will always be on the
line, and Lorna must decide whether she can live with that--
if a killer lets them have any future at all...
