A GOOD MAN by Ani Katz begins in innocence but ends in ruination; it is a tale that conceals rather than reveals and demands a lot from its audience.

VoirSeries

Growing up in the gothic atmosphere similar to that of an Anne Rice novel, (unusually close familial relationships, a crumbling mansion, creepy siblings and distant parental figures, as well as an unusual love for opera and the trappings of high society), Thomas Martin has long tried to escape his background through education, and a marriage to a woman from another nation and faith. While he is triumphant in climbing up the ladder of success, and has the appropriate accessories of wealth in terms of finances, family and a career, the responsibility he has taken for protecting "his girls" from bad decisions or from everything else in life has begun an implosion inside of him, one he tries to control but could potentially lead him to catastrophic decisions where he could lose everything.

A GOOD MAN is definitely a novel that kept me excited to ry to figure out the main character and what he is concealing from readers, as well as what is going on in his mind because of the ambiguity he presents within the narrative. The best part of A GOOD MAN is the puzzle she presents to the reader, asking the audience what is going on with Thomas, and no one will be able to come up with the same answer. The guesswork alone is enough to make my heart palpitate and continue to obsess over the story even weeks after I finished it.

Part a broken fairytale-part uncertain narrative, and a critique on society and the expectations placed on men from the time they are young, A GOOD MAN by Ani Katz will long continue to thrive in my heart, sending my mind racing to try to trace the conclusion and motivation for Thomas Martin's actions. For a reader seeking a tale with an unreliable narrator, they shouldn't look any further than A GOOD MAN which I hope will one day become a classic from these times.

SUMMARY

A dark and gripping novel of psychological suspense about a family man driven to unspeakable acts, in the vein of The Perfect Nanny and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Thomas Martin was a devoted family man who had all the trappings of an enviable life: a beautiful wife and daughter, a well-appointed home on Long Island's north shore, a job at a prestigious Manhattan advertising firm. He was also a devoted son and brother, shielding the women in his orbit from the everyday brutalities of the world.

But what happens when Thomas’s fragile ego is rocked? After committing a horrific deed — that he can never undo — Thomas grapples with his sense of self. Sometimes he casts himself as a victim and, at other times, a monster. All he ever did was try to be a good man, but maybe if he tells his version of the story, he might uncover how and why things unraveled so horribly.
