The Doom virus annihilated civilization as we know it, while various magickal abilities began to emerge in the population. A fanatical group called the Purity Warriors has risen to power and subsequently imprisons, tortures, and murders those imbued with magickal powers. Fallon Swift is “the One” foretold to bring about change and now the time is at hand. Prepare for battles….
The first book in the Chronicles of One series remains one of my favorite dystopian/fantasy novels of all time and I’ve eagerly anticipated the conclusion with THE RISE OF MAGICKS ever since I closed the last page of YEAR ONE. I love that we get to see how New Hope has grown and evolved since the collapse of civilization. It’s amazing to see just how far society has progressed despite the threats posed by the Purity Warriors and the Dark Uncanny.
Fallon is the obvious heroine, since she was prophesied to be “the One”, but I have to admit I admire her mom, Lana, and her strength even more so. Fallon grew up with a mom determined to show her love, teach her how to both survive and thrive, and willing to fight when necessary. I particularly love the scene between Lana and Mrs. Aldi, despite the brevity of it, as it showcases the core message of the Chronicles of One series about loving one another without bias despite differences in appearances or abilities.
THE RISE OF MAGICKS is the third and concluding book in the Chronicles of the One. THE RISE OF MAGICKS is best read in the context of the series. This storyline has been building up to the conclusion since the arrival of the Doom virus decimated civilization. Nora Roberts does a magnificent job with the complexity of the world building, crafting a dystopian future where hope and fear are constantly at war. Nora Roberts is a master at any genre she sets her pen (or computer) to, and THE RISE OF MAGICKS is a tale any fantasy lover will appreciate and enjoy!
