Non-Fiction Craft

In KNITTED TOYS, by Jody Long, you get a bunch of knitting patterns for some adorable toys for boys and girls at the cost of about one dollar a piece. For those of us that frequently stroll through websites looking at patterns - that price is really reasonable. One of my criteria for purchasing any craft book is whether or not I would actually make any of the showcased items. In the case of KNITTED TOYS, I can definitely say I would get my money's worth.

Jody Long starts out with a bunch of really good suggestions and steps toward being successful in knitting and constructing these toys. One thing she reminds us is that these items require rather small amounts of yarn and so they are great stash busters. Each item is fully illustrated with clear and colorful photos of the finished item. Most items are basically stockinette stitch with a few using reverse stockinette stitch as a means to achieve texture. There is a rather new trend of supplying step-by-step photos in many craft books. Jody Long does not do that in KNITTED TOYS. Her row-by-row steps are easy to follow.

Rusty the Puppy is absolutely my favorite - with his amazing paws, and he comes with his own bowl and bone. Any kid would love this. Ruby the Russian Doll is quite gorgeous. Jacob the Bear and Mrs. Hopper the Rabbit are beautifully constructed sitting stuffed animals with lovely faces and clothes. And there's even a hedgehog complete with a play mat and friends. In addition to an airplane and firetruck, the patterns in KNITTED TOYS are appropriate for any child that likes to hug their toys. I can't think of a better gift than one personally made. With KNITTED TOYS by Jody Long, you will find inspiration to get out your knitting needles and your stash of yarn and get busy making some beautiful toys that will be cherished for a long time.
