THE DUCHESS IN HIS BED is the fourth book in Lorraine Heath’s “Sins for All Seasons” series. When Aiden Trewlove first locks eyes with a beautiful masked woman in his club, all his streetwise savvy falls away and he is enthralled. Although Aiden has been trained to spot a scam, Selena Sheffield, Duchess of Lushing is determined to work her wiles on him and get a baby out of the bargain. Selena might be technically free to explore a romance with Aiden, since she is a widow, but her circumstances and family obligations constrict her. This is a story that deals with the difficulties that women face in England during the late 1800s and the problem of illegitimate children. As with any book by Lorraine Heath, THE DUCHESS IN HIS BED has a human drama at the heart of this story that is superb and a romance that is deliciously sensual.
Although Selena walks into Aiden’s Elysium Club with a specific purpose in mind, the intense and reciprocal attraction between her and Aiden is compelling. The chemistry and sexual tension are palpable. Both main characters are flawed yet sympathetic. Selena knows what she is doing to secure the futures of her younger siblings is not totally ethical, and she struggles with the choices she makes. Aiden is of a lower class than his biological father, but it is obvious to his friends and family that he is a much better man than his father ever was. Aiden’s struggle is how to keep the woman he loves while making her happy that she chose him. He also doesn’t want to be the absent father that his own was to him. You can’t help but care about these characters. Both main characters demonstrate a strong love and loyalty to family, and an equally strong will. I like that Selena came to her own conclusions about what matters most to her and how she wants to ultimately live the rest of her life. I also like how Aiden is willing to sacrifice for love.
THE DUCHESS IN HIS BED has a wonderful mix of enchantment and earthy sensuality for readers to savor. This book has a fairy tale feel but with down-to-earth characters. I love the epilogue and glimpse into the future this author gives readers. I look forward to Lorraine Heath’s next book.
