How does a man go back? How can he go back after leaving his
brother in the lurch and without warning? How can a man go
back and face people, especially an Amish man? Yet, how can
he honour his grandmother's last letter to him? Are their
differences too difficult to overcome?
Roman Raber has always felt out of tune with what was
expected of him and there is no love in his family. His
parents were harsh and stern and only his Grossmammi's
kindnesses kept him going. Now she was gone, too. He had
wanted to go to college and to act on his talents, but the
application period had taken much longer than he anticipated
and now he was out of money. Feeling no choice, he made his
decision.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Leanne Chupp is having the time of
her life working at Daniel Raber's shop. Leanne is tall and
strong and loves her job. Traditional Amish women's work
has never interested her, and she had soon proven to Daniel
and the community members in Birch Creek that she had the
ability and the aptitude to understand machines and can
figure out how to fix them so they work. The only time she
wants to work in a kitchen is when she can fix a washing
machine!
Then disaster strikes! Roman, Daniel's lazy brother, comes
back and she is out of a job! Why is life so unfair? What
can God's plan for her possibly be?
Kathleen Fuller is a highly regarded and award-winning
author of many Amish stories, and THE PROMISE OF A LETTER is
definitely going to gain her many more fans with her tall,
feisty and independent Leanne Chupp, a must talented and
unusual Amish woman. THE PROMISE OF A LETTER is the second
in Amish
Letters, her latest series, and focuses on letters
written by a dying woman to her two grandsons asking them to
be reconciled. While THE PROMISE OF A LETTER is completely
readable on its own, Fuller's many fans are sure to relish
this latest addition to the series and reconnecting with
characters previously introduced, such and Jalon and his wife..
Having read many Amish stories by various writers, I am
impressed with Fuller's storytelling talents and bringing
to light two complex characters who in differing ways are at
odds with their communities and/or their families; be it by
choice of occupations or in other life choices. I especially
appreciate Fuller's ability to really pull the reader into
the heartfelt values as the characters grapple with their
feelings and thoughts and find their sources of joy, As the
plot develops, different perspectives come to light as
Daniel learns about the differences between his home
community and that at Birch Creek. Complexities are also
introduced as two relatives need to deal with concerns in
their pregnancies.
THE PROMISE OF A LETTER is an easy book to read; yet, full
of complex circumstances and tensions as the characters deal
with strong feelings, tough concerns. and still find the
faith to live their lives and practice their beliefs. So
get you copy and find out how THE PROMISE OF A LETTER can
open a closed heart!
A letter brings him back to his Amish family. It
will take someone truly extraordinary to make him stay.
Roman is on the verge of leaving the Amish ways. Feeling
confined by the strict rules, he longs to do something more
with his life. But when things don’t go as planned, Roman’s
prospects outside of the community dwindle. Upon learning
that his beloved grandmother has died and left a letter
urging him to reconcile with his brother in Birch Creek,
Roman decides to return home. But he doesn’t plan to stay
for long.
Leanna Chupp has always made her own way in her small
community of Birch Creek. Though some may call her
unconventional—strange, even—Leanna is happy. Her unique
outlook on life has meant she’s never had many suitors
pursuing courtship, which Leanna doesn’t mind. She is
content being single.
But when Roman and Leanna find themselves working together
again, everything changes. Though neither fit squarely
within the strictures of the Amish faith, their differences
could be the very thing to help them form a deeper
connection to their community and to each other. The
question remains: will this strengthening bond be enough to
make Roman stay for good?
