After years of living with an abusive adoptive father and
caring for young boys she called her brothers and a wee
sister Margaret, Bethoc Matheson has quickly learned to
endure and to keep her thoughts and actions hidden from
him.
Still, she knew there was no point in protesting her fate
or understanding the fate of her mother and unknown
father. If she does, she would be beaten into
acceptance; still, she throws those cares to the wind
when she sees the battered man lying on the beach. She
has to help. After getting him to a safe place, Bethoc
finds herself caring for Sir Callum MacMillian of
Whytemont who had been looking for his young missing
relative. He is injured and has to stay there, but can
she protect him? Does she hold a clue to where the
missing boy might be?
HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN is the 21st book written by the
talented Hannah Howell in her The Murrays series. As
such, it is sure to please Howell's fans, both new and
old alike, with her strong character development and
historical sense of the time. Sir Callum MacMillan is a
hero and laird worthy of the name and one can't help but
be compassionate for him as he struggles with his
injuries and need to save others from harm. Bethoc is
also very likeable and shows a keen spirit despite all
her challenges she faces.
If you like Highland romances, there is lots here to
please. While some parts of the story seem a bit
formulistic, HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN is still a stirring read
and will hold your attention. I am looking forward to
the next in the Murray series to see what happens next to
members of this interesting clan!
The Murrays are back in this thrilling new tale from New
York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell . . .
Responsible for protecting her younger siblings from their
abusive father, Bethoc Matheson is in no position to rescue
another soul in Scotland. Yet when she sees a bleeding man
on the verge of drowning, that’s exactly what she does,
securing him safely in a cave where she can return day after
day to tend to his wounds.
Sir Callum MacMillan can scarcely believe such a slight lass
as Bethoc could save him from the grasp of death. But he
knows the telltale marks of an angry fist on her skin, and
he knows she has the soul of a fighter within her feminine
frame. Raised to be a protector of the weak by his Murray
clansmen, Callum would prefer to be the one saving her—and
save her, he will. If he can first survive the treacherous
attack that led him into her irresistible arms . . .
