A local firefighter contacts Spencer and asks him to look into a fire that killed his best friend and two other firefighters. The fire was called an accident but Jack McGee knows it couldn't have been. A year after the fire even more buildings are burning down and no one seems to be getting a handle on the situation.
Now that Spencer has been hired, though, things will change. When Spencer goes to the fire department for help, he at first receives push back. But when they understand he really is only trying to help them, they give him access to the information he needs. Now that Spencer has a start he is making the fire bug nervous, and the fire bug or bugs are escalating the incidents and the chance for more loss of life grows daily.
I love a good mystery and Spencer is one of the best private investigators ever. He is also surrounded by a great group of characters. Hawk is everyone's favorite good, bad guy. You always think there always someone better, stronger, but with Hawk, there probably isn't. If we all had friends like him life would be great. Excitement, intrigue and the always present love of Spencer's life make SLOW BURN worth picking up and reading. Ace Atkins continues to do a great job keeping the world's greatest PI alive.
Boston PI Spenser faces a hot case and a personal crisis
in the latest adventure in the iconic New York
Timesβbestselling series from author Ace Atkins.
The fire at a boarded-up Catholic church raged hot and fast,
lighting up Bostonβs South End and killing three
firefighters who were trapped in the inferno. A year later,
as the city prepares to honor their sacrifice, there are
still no answers about how the deadly fire started. Most at
the department believe it was just a simple accident: faulty
wiring in a century-old building. But Boston firefighter
Jack McGee, who lost his best friend in the blaze, suspects
arson.
McGee is convinced department investigators arenβt
sufficiently connected to the cityβs lowlifes to get a
handle on who's behind the blazeβso he takes the case to
Spenser. Spenser quickly learns not only that McGee might be
right, but that the fire might be linked to a rash of new
arsons, spreading through the city, burning faster and
hotter every night. Spenser follows the trail of fires to
Bostonβs underworld, bringing him, his trusted ally Hawk,
and his apprentice Sixkill toe-to-toe with a dangerous new
enemy who wants Spenser dead, and doesnβt play by the cityβs
old rules. Spenser has to find the firebug before he kills
again β and stay alive himself.
