Montana, June, 1907. Count Frederick Von Bergen and his daughter, Phoebe, arrive at the newly renovated Hotel Broadmore and Natatorium. Advertised as a spectacular European Resort in the wilderness, Graf Von Bergen, as he is titled in his German hometown, is not impressed. He wants to conclude his business in America and return to his palatial home as soon as possible. His business is to procure sapphires for the best price and head home.
Phoebe is excited to visit America and enjoys the fascination of the American West. She is looking for cowboys everywhere! Her father is cold and distant and warns Phoebe to stay close to the hotel with her maid, Gerda while he leaves for two weeks to check on his mining operations. His oldest and wealthiest client, Sapphire Duchess, is an eccentric noblewoman who demands all her jewelry be designed with sapphires. He has worked for her for decades traveling everywhere on her behalf. He has heard about the Montana Yogo sapphire, reputed to be outstanding and much cheaper to purchase. He plans to make a great deal for her, but refuses to tell her the sapphires do not come from Ceylon, as promised. He knows he can trick her and make a fortune for himself. He has done it for years.
When left alone at the Hotel, Phoebe meets adorable ten-year-old Kenny and his handsome friend, Ian Harper. Ian is about her age, charming and very Christian in his words and deeds. They both tell Phoebe she looks just like Kenny's mother and when Phoebe meets her, a long held secret is discovered. Soon many lies and deeply hidden deceptions are uncovered, and she is forced to face the truth about what her father has been keeping from her for years. It is time to face him and force him to tell her the truth.
Tracey Peterson is a sterling writer of inspirational and historical fiction with a touch of romance and adventure that truly appeals. This is my favorite genre. Ian Harper is a special hero with strong Christian beliefs that touched my heart. Phoebe enjoys great adventure, finds her kindred spirit, and is makes the future she deserves. Jeers are easy to direct at Graf Von Bergen, a really selfish, hate filled, abusive man that I found easy to despise. A BEAUTY REFINED is a riveting story with colorful characters, spiritual challenges that resonate throughout this suspense filled plot. I loved it and will recommend it to everyone who enjoy a romantic journey with a sweet ending.
