Julia Bonatti just knew trouble was brewing when her client's natal chart revealed mercury was under the sway of a Neptune transit. After breaking her own rule and not requiring a new client to come to one of her designated places to do astrology readings, Julia finds herself dealing with an elderly client accusing one of Julia's long term clients of plotting murder. Unfortunately, Julia's dilemma with her clients isn't her only problem as she's now found herself the target of Reverend Roy of the Prophet's Tabernacle. Can Julia uncover what is going on before she loses everything?
THE MADNESS OF MERCURY is the first book in the Zodiac Mystery series and offers readers a unique heroine. Julia is a great heroine, willing to go to great lengths to help both her friends and her clients. You can't help but admire her spunk!
Connie di Marco does a great job at integrating astrology into the storyline. The astrological events help drive the story forward as the various readings are integral to the plotline. However, what I like best is that Connie di Marco provides readers unfamiliar with astrology enough details in order to make the terminology and zodiac events meaningful.
My only disappointment with THE MADNESS OF MERCURY involved the plot angle with Reverend Roy and his group of cult followers. They seemed a bit over the top as Reverend Roy and the Prophet's Temple became almost caricatures rather than solid villains.
THE MADNESS OF MERCURY is a solid start to the Zodiac Mystery series. Connie di Marco crafts an informative and entertaining cozy mystery that keeps the reader guessing up until the very end. Readers who like their cozy mysteries on the paranormal side will appreciate Connie di Marco's use of astrology in the plotline. I can't wait to read the next installment in the Zodiac Mystery series!
San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti's life is turned upside down when she becomes the target of the city's newest cult leader, Reverend Roy of the Prophet's Tabernacle. Driven out of her apartment in the midst of a disastrous Mercury retrograde period, she takes shelter with a client who's caring for two elderly aunts. One aunt appears stricken with dementia and the other has fallen under the spell of the Reverend Roy. To add to the confusion, a young man claiming to be a long lost nephew arrives. The longer he stays, the more dangerous things become. Is the young man truly a member of the family? Can astrology confirm that? Julia's not sure, but one thing she does know is that Mercury wasn't merely the messenger of the gods—he was a trickster and a liar as well.
