Are you familiar with the term "bonkbuster"? If not, if you've read Jilly Cooper (which, if you have not, stop immediately and do so), then you've read a bonkbuster. It's the term for a novel version of a soap opera, usually set in the U.K. with the obscenely wealthy and their dramatic problems. Other examples include Rebecca Chance, Lulu Taylor, Tilly Bagshawe, and Victoria Fox. DEADLY OBSESSION falls neatly into that box; an addictive read from beginning to end, perfect to pick up for any upcoming flights or days at the beach.
The premise itself is bonkers - imagine being a grieving widow for about six months. You and your fabulous too-good-to-be-true hubby were partying at the club you own. An explosion goes off, killing not only your husband, but your best friend as well! Devastated, you begin to pick up the pieces to your life, despite the fact that your husband left you nothing, the club was repossessed, and you have no other family but him. Life is not going so great for you, so imagine the heart stopping event of getting a letter from said husband which was only postmarked two days ago.
I know. I KNOW! Right!?!
Amy Barrowman Hart feels your shock, trust me she does. As she reads the letter, which she is convinced is from her dead husband Riley, she embarks on a journey to discover that her world is in even more shambles than she thought. Add in some of his sworn enemies, secrets Riley had kept hidden for decades, and you've got a plot that just won't stop.
My only complaint is DEADLY OBSESSION is a little heavier on suspense and lighter on the sex than I like my bonkbusters, but that's taste. It's still a fabulously sexy book.
I'm spoiling nothing, because the twists and turns of this one are worth your time completely, but know it's nothing but drama and fun. I read it in about two sittings, all while sipping pina coladas by the pool on a Caribbean cruise and I can highly recommend that particular combination. If pina coladas are in short supply, allow DEADLY OBSESSION to mentally transport you somewhere sunny, while spinning you tales of problems more dramatic than yours.
