Three years ago dragon shifter, Ryder, left the love of his
life, a human named Kinsey. At that time, dragon kings were
forbidden human mates. He kept an eye on her but never
spoke to her again until Constantine, the King of the
Kings, sent him to Glasgow to protect the humans from the
swarm of Dark Fae where he comes face-to-face with Kinsey
again. Only he frightens her by shifting from dragon to man
to
protect her. The love that heated like SMOKE AND FIRE was
dashed in one moment. He would never regret his actions
because Kinsey is alive.
Kinsey had not gotten over Ryder, no matter how hard she
tried and even after seeing who and what he really was...
but she knew she could never
forgive. A work order from the company sends her to Dreagan
only to find they weren't expecting her and couldn't let
her leave until they found the truth. Is it possible to
find the evidence to exonerate her? More importantly can
she find a way to forgive and love her Dragon King again?
SMOKE AND FIRE takes us back to author Donna Grant's
fascinating Dark Kings world. With the focus on
Ryder
and Kinsey, there is more computer and monitoring action
than the usual fighting we have seen in the earlier
offerings. I think the drama, the questions, the truths and
untruths give a lot of insight to the day-to-day dealings
of the modern protection of the Kings and their land. I
adored Ryder, always did, and yes I wanted to kick him for
not going back to Kinsey after he knew the spell had broken
and others had found human mates. On the other hand, I
enjoyed the war Kinsey has with herself over her
feelings, because no matter how often she told herself she
was over him, you could see she wasn't at all.
A lot
of things seem to be coming to a head in SMOKE AND FIRE,
including Con and his
affair with the Fae Queen, Ulrik and his games with the
Dark Fae and his uncle. And of course we see more of Rhi
and her ongoing battle with herself, Balladyn and the
reaper who has been following her around. There is another
who has become one of the new allies of the Dragons, and
she
is the sister of Henry North, the former MI5 agent and the
introduction of her is done with an interesting twist or
two.
I love reading the Dark Kings series, it is one that
takes me
into an incredible fantasy world that allows me a very
enjoyable escape. If you love dragons, intrigue, sweet yet
steamy romance, a second chance at love and a number of
unexpected twists then SMOKE AND FIRE has got to be in your
hands.
