Women's Fiction Contemporary

Maeve is a single mom who loved to bake. She owns her own shop, but is having a lot of problems with her landlord. On top of all of her problems, her father passes away. At the funeral, two of her old neighbors, Delores and Margie, show up. They for some reason never cared for Maeve as a child and made her life miserable. Delores has had one too many to drink and tells Maeve she has an older sister. Maeve is shocked by this news, since Jack her father had never mentioned anything about this to her.

Maeve doesn't know if she should believe Delores or not, but she is now in search of a long lost sister. While trying to come to grips with this news, she is also dealing with her two daughters who are giving her a lot of problems and trying to keep her friend Jo's marriage intact.

LIES THAT BIND by Maggie Barbieri is very hard to put down. While reading, I didn't know this was a second book in a series. However, LIES THAT BIND is not confusing at all. I don't feel you have to read ONCE UPON A LIE, the first book, to know what is going on in this one. Some parts of LIES THAT BIND are a little humorist, and make me ask could some of this stuff really happen. I think it could. This is one of those books you don't want to put down, but after you finish, you realize maybe you read too fast! I'm waiting for the next one, LIE IN PLAIN SIGHT, to come out. Great writing, and Ms. Barbieri keeps you guessing all the way through.

SUMMARY

n the acclaimed Once Upon a Lie, Maggie Barbieri introduced Maeve Conlon, a single mother and bakery owner hiding dark secrets behind her cookie-cutter suburban life. Now, Maeve's moving on with everyday life when the unthinkable happens: her father dies of a massive heart attack. Maeve's mother died when Maeve was very young, and growing up, it was always just her and her father. But on the day of his funeral, Maeve learns a shocking secret. She might have a sister she's never met. Maeve knows her father would never have kept something like that from her…Unless he thought he had to. Meantime, someone keeps sneaking around Maeve's bakery. At first the signs are subtle, but then it becomes vandalism, and then it grows even more frightening. Could it be related to Maeve's search for her missing sister? Maeve soon decides it's time to take matters into her own capable hands. But administering her personal brand of justice is a dangerous undertaking, and between the ever-watchful eyes of her family and the lingering attention she's attracted from local police, Maeve will be forced to decide just how much she's willing to risk in the name of justice.
