Right, okay. *Takes deep breath* Honest reviews, right? That's the deal here. So let me be honest - STEALING THE BACHELOR didn't work for me. I trudged through it because I made a commitment to review it, and I take those seriously. I found the book cloying and frustrating, the characters odd, and the pace of the story off. I usually like the Cyrano tropeβI'm going to help you find someone but actually we'll end up togetherβbut this one felt forced.
However, I've poked around the internet and noticed I'm in the minority on not liking it, so take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt. Other readers reported finding STEALING THE BACHELOR sweetβthey really like how Ann found redemption of her past bad choices in Eric. I couldn't believe how someone like Ann could make such bad choices and then choose Eric. Other readers like how Eric defied his family to offer financial support to Ann. I found the fact he hid his help in the way he did super unsupportive and sent a signal to Ann he found her to be as useful as a puppy in living her own life. His family is a nightmare of Gothic novel proportions, and her family is fine but unremarkable.
I'm a firm believer that not everything can work for everybody. This is, therefore, not a bad review of something as much as it's a "great for others, not for me and maybe not for you" type of essay. The people who loved STEALING THE BACHELOR found it heartwarming, sweet and charming and maybe you will too. If you do, make sure to leave a comment and tell me what I've missed! Happy reading, whatever you choose.
