HIS KIND OF TROUBLE is Book 2 in Terri L. Austin's Beauty and the Brit series. As somebody who is new to this series and this author, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The heroine and hero of HIS KIND OF TROUBLE are related to the couple in the previous book. The story starts out with a prologue that gives a little background information like how the main characters first met, and what they were like then.
Monica Campbell is a tough, no-nonsense business woman now but when sexy ghost of wilder days past Cal Hughes reappears in her life, she struggles to unwind without completely unraveling. With Monica, Terri L. Austin creates a flawed yet sympathetic character. I like the parallels between Monica and Cal's visiting baby sister, and the way he connects with Monica over their respective family conflicts. Her reasons for stifling herself are deeply personal and connected to so many things that have happened in her life that left her wounded. Her romantic tryst with Cal, years earlier, is one of her happier memories. The romance that develops in the here and now between her and Cal is electric and intensely passionate. Even though she is extremely reluctant to become emotionally involved with Cal, the bond that is created between them and the sense of camaraderie becomes just as strong as their passion for each other.
Cal Hughes is like a naughty guardian angel, seducing Monica and getting her to act on impulse and live the way she wants to, rather than how she thinks she ought to. I thoroughly fell for Cal while reading HIS KIND OF TROUBLE. Cal is such a yummy hero -- sexy, fun, cool British accent, and he genuinely cares about Monica. It comes as a little bit of a surprise to Cal, but it's not just lust and selfish reasons that make him want to liberate Monica from a job she hates and a bland, joyless existence. I love the hidden depth to Cal and how completely he falls for Monica. Cal in love is a beautiful thing.
HIS KIND OF TROUBLE is better than chocolate. This is a perfect romance for contemporary romance fans who like their romance extra steamy, characters with complexity, fun flirty chemistry, and raw emotion. HIS KIND OF TROUBLE is one of the best romances I've read this year. I can't wait for the next book by Terri L. Austin!
