Elly is used to the paranormal, but this time the ghost she encounters is a bit different. A strange sigil on the ghost leads Elly to believe someone has bound the ghost. Is a necromancer at work? And just what is going on with the local vampires? The lives of everyone Elly holds dear may be at stake.
GRAVE MATTERS is the second book in the Night Owls series and is best appreciated in the context of the series as a whole. There are a plethora of characters and their various relationships are paramount to the enjoyment of GRAVE MATTERS. We see the story unfolding from a variety of perspectives as the story doesn't focus on just one character. Instead, we see the various character storylines coming together and expanding.
Everyone and everything is suspect in GRAVE MATTERS. I like the suspense as it keeps the reader guessing as to the motivations and underlying machinations occurring. However, the sweet moments are the ones that really made me appreciate GRAVE MATTERS the most, partly because they are so few and far between in a novel thick with betrayal. Cavale's attempt to mend fences with Elly is endearing, particularly when he attempts cooking for her. I love seeing these moments of normalcy in the midst of ghouls, vampires, and ghosts galore!
Lauren M. Roy offers urban fantasy readers a delightful mix of the paranormal, as we have a wide range of supernatural creatures. The complexity of the world building is to be commended as I love the depth of Lauren M. Roy's world. The ending offers a twist that has me hopeful we will see more of the Night Owls world!
