Easily one of the most difficult stories to read. You have to consider just how much abuse a person can take. You have to think of just how strong you have to be to suffer the abuse and still be standing. Jennifer Ryan has penned a very carefully crafted story that documents the strengths people possess in the face of the worse adversity. WHEN IT"S RIGHT is about something that is so intrinsically wrong -- parental abuse. WHEN IT'S RIGHT is part of the Montana Men series and although all I've had the pleasure to read and review have been amazing -- this one stands out from all the rest. It is just so well written and so hard hitting. Part of writing a review is taking care to leave out important parts of the story -- spoilers are definitely frown upon. So the following is a very brief outline of what the reader will find reading one of Jennifer Ryan's very best stories -- WHEN IT'S RIGHT.

Evil is evil -- even when it is embodied in the very people who are supposed to care and protect you. Gillian has known evil her entire life. Her father's life has been a series of disappointments and failures and his greatest failure is in not protecting his son and daughter -- from himself. Gillian learned at a very early age that she had to be smart and alert to the mood swings of her father. She had to be on guard not only for herself but for her baby brother Justin. But you see even if you are not actually bearing the brunt of the abuse you are still scarred. Justin's scars seem to run as deep as Gillian's. Both children missed out on a childhood. Gillian was determined to save what was left of Justin's as soon as she could eliminate the danger.

WHEN IT"S RIGHT opens on a tragic scary dangerous note. Gillian once again being forced to protect herself from a drunken wild man. All she wanted to do was separate him from Justin. In doing so she became the target of all his rage and in the end only one of them would survive this latest event.

Gillian had no recourse but to turn to the only living relative she and Justin had -- her grandfather -- her mother's father Bud. Bud had been living with his own failure to protect his only daughter -- Gillian's mother. Her mother had been wild and Bud was never able to get his family back under the protection of his home. Grief and guilt -- two very strong emotions. Perhaps now that Gillian and Justin came to Bud's home- his ranch -- he would finally be able to salvage what was left of his family.

Blake was one of Bud's partners and knew all about the family's issues. He didn't know what to expect with Gillian and Justin's arrival at the ranch. He was not at all prepared for this lovely young broken woman and her charge. And as time went by Blake was in awe of the amazing strength Gillian had both physical and emotional when it came to her brother. But Blake was very aware of how fragile Gillian was. She was in many ways as fragile as the abused horses he worked so diligently to save -- to repair. But Gillian was going to surprise them all with her tenacity, stubbornness and all-encompassing love.

If you want to read a story that will tug at your heart while grabbing hold of your gut this is the one you should go after. WHEN IT'S RIGHT starts out so very wrong but ultimately shows just what love can do. People are capable of doing so much damage. But at the same time with a good strong heart so much can be accomplished toward living a good life. WHEN IT"S RIGHT will definitely have you wondering if you would have the strength to survive given so many obstacles in your path. There are times when you want Gillian to let down her guard but then you realize how difficult that would be for someone who has spent her entire life watching both hers and her brothers back. Short of death nothing would stand in her way. Trust just wasn't something she could ever afford. But WHEN IT"S RIGHT Gillian will know.

SUMMARY

Everything's bigger in Big Sky country, including the hearts of the Montana Men Wide open sky, rolling green hills . . . Gillian Tucker could get used to life in the country—one far from the violence she left behind in San Francisco. Warily accepting an invitation to the Montana ranch that belongs to her grandfather, a man she's never met, Gillian hopes this is the haven she seeks. A sexy, overbearing cowboy who shines a light on her well-hidden dreams is not at all part of her plans. Blake Bowden's reckless past is far behind him, and as a newly named co-owner of Three Peaks Ranch, he's not taking any chances. Until a beautiful, haunted woman arrives, igniting a desire he shouldn't feel. His partner's granddaughter is strictly off limits. But the longer Gillian's there, the stronger the pull grows between them. And when a new danger surfaces, Blake will do anything to keep her safe…even if it means risking everything for her heart.
