Mystery Cozy

DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE is Book seven in Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery cozy mystery series. Although I am new to this series, I was able to enjoy DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE without feeling lost. Jenn McKinlay does a good job of defining the main characters and their relationships to each other. Rather than be confusing, I think the large cast of "good guys" - Mel's best friends as well as bakery co-owners Tate and Angie, Angie's goofy brothers, assorted local oddballs, and miscellaneous suitors - are likable, entertaining and make for a delightful story.

I love that DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE starts out with something fun like a zombie walk. That appeals to me right away, since I love zombies and anything like that. However, I also think the zombie walk makes a great way of introducing Mel Cooper and her friends and employees while also showing the wonderful group dynamic. As much as the murder mystery in DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE is intriguing, the characters really make this cozy mystery extra special. The little bit of tension created by the romance dilemmas facing Angie and Mel add complexity and depth to the story and the characters without overshadowing the mystery.

After reading the book description, I was worried that this story would be focused on mobsters and have more danger and suspense than a typical cozy mystery. Thankfully, Jenn McKinlay balances the danger and intensity with the lighter and more traditional cozy elements. Also, mobsters are just a few of the suspects rather than being the focus. I like that Mel had so many connections to law enforcement -- through family and friends. These connections help make it more believable for Mel to be closely involved in a murder investigation.

DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE has the recipe for a perfect cozy mystery -- fun characters, a little danger, a little romance, and a compelling whodunit. After reading DARK CHOCOLATE DEMISE I will hunt down the previous books in the series now that I know what I've been missing. I eagerly await the next installment in this entertaining series by Jenn McKinlay!

SUMMARY

The New York Times bestselling Cupcake Bakery Mysteries bake up sweet surprises, but as the series continues, Mel and Angie are in for a fresh batch of trouble… Scottsdale, Arizona, may not be the liveliest place on earth, but it’s never been as dead as this. Hundreds of fans have gathered together for the first annual Old Town Zombie Walk, and Mel, Angie, and the Fairy Tale Cupcake crew are donning their best undead attire to sell some horror- themed desserts to the hungry hordes. But the fun turns to fright when Mel finds a real dead body in a prop casket outside of the bakery’s truckβ€”and the corpse looks alarmingly like a zombie of their own. Knowing that Joe, Angie’s brother and Mel’s former flame, has been working on a dangerous mob case, Mel worries that the murder is a hit gone wrong and that someone near and dear was the real target. To keep any of her friends from winding up six feet under, Mel will do whatever it takes to find a killerβ€”no matter how scary things get... INCLUDES RECIPES
