In LA, Emma Tyler is VP of events-planning at CEM, Cypress Event Management. If you ask her how she got that job, she smiles and answers, "I slept with one of the Board of Directors." She has a tell-it-like-it-is personality, she is absolutely gorgeous, with a wanton reputation. She has a dirty little secret. She looks for older men, seduces them and always takes a personal memento from them for her trophy collection.
Reggie Applebaum, film-mogul/power broker in Hollywood wanted a Bat Mitzvah for his 12 year old only child, Cayley, proclaiming "money is no object." His teen daughter is a spoiled brat, rude and bossy, with a sense of entitlement that is unbelievable. Emma, in spite of the child being almost unbearable, plans an event that promises to be stunning even by Hollywood standards.
Cooper Jessup is a founding member of Thrillseekers Anonymous, a company formed to stage extreme heart-stopping sport outings for the very rich and famous. Dark hair, handsome, with eyes the shade "of the fog that rolled off the ocean", met Emma at the event and the attraction between them was steamy. Cooper asks Emma to go into the lounge where they had a Karaoke set up so they could get to know each other. Emma is tempted but refuses. Later, Cooper sees Reggie Applebaum and Emma in a limo together and the scene disgusts him.
Carl Freeman another Hollywood broker calls Cooper for help. He had a one night stand with Emma Tyler and she stole his medal and under the medal was his, soon to be ex-wife's mothers huge diamond ring, valued at a small fortune. Cooper refuses but Carl makes him an offer he can't refuse. He discovers Emma is hiding at Homecoming Ranch, a property her miserable father left to Emma and her two half sisters. So Cooper heads to Pine River, Colorado in pursuit of the stolen trophy from Carl Freeman.
This book explores dysfunction, terminal illness, deep emotions, and family relationships. The cast of characters is colorful and fun especially young Leo Kendrick who has Motor Neuron Condition. His personality is so lovable, his sense of humor had me laughing constantly. The sweet and loving affection between Leo and Emma is delightful, the descriptions of their time spent together, he in his wheelchair with Emma watching the TV shows was pure joy. The love between Emma and Cooper builds slowly but surely. He is patient and understanding, finally giving them a happily ever after. Good read, as always Julia London.
