FORGED is Book 4 in Jacquelyn Frank's World of
Nightwalkers series. I am a longtime fan of Jacquelyn
Frank's and am happy with what she did in this story.
FORGED takes familiar characters Jacob and Isabella from
Frank's Nightwalkers series and brings them into this
spin-off. As a fan of that series, I'm excited to see the
familiar characters mix with these new characters I've never
read before. I don't think the addition of Jacob and
Isabella distracted in any way from the romance and story of
the main characters --Katrina and Ahnvil. I look forward to
more mixing of characters from both series in the future.
I like the set-up of this story. You know there will be
supernatural elements in the story from the very beginning,
but a good chunk of FORGED is the classic "snowed in"
storyline. Katrina Haynes's home is a fairly isolated cabin
in the middle of a winter wonderland. She comes upon a
wounded man and takes him back to her place and nurses him.
Unlike some other books with a slightly similar set-up,
this is more believable because Katrina actually has a
medical background. There is a sense of urgency because,
not only is Ahnvil injured, but he needs to get back to his
touchstone or else he will progressively weaken and become
crazed. I like Katrina's reaction to discovering Ahnvil is
a magical being. I think Katrina grows over the course of
the story. As she finds out more about who she is, she
gains more confidence. Ahnvil admires her inner strength
even though he sees her as somebody who seems so physically
vulnerable at the beginning. A major conflict in FORGED
comes from the danger that the villain Panahasi presents,
as well as the mystery behind Adoma's Amulet. I like that
Jacquelyn Frank creates strong female characters, and that
Katrina is able to face dangers on her own and she doesn't
always have to be protected. FORGED is another classic red-
hot Jacquelyn Frank romance with wonderful characters and
intriguing world-building.
Even though there are so many types of magical beings and
great story-telling, I never found the story too confusing
to keep track of. I love that the hero of FORGED is a sexy
gargoyle with a Scottish accent. I look forward to reading
other books in this series and hopefully see what's in
store for characters like Kamen and Grey. These two men of
mystery are fascinating and full of secrets -- a heady
combination. I like that they help Katrina learn how to
master her magical abilities without being condescending.
I'm super excited about the direction the storyline is
taking and what it means for future books in the World of
Nightwalkers series.
