In the late 1950's Eve Noel was an actress, When Sophie was growing up she watched Eve's movies, and wanted to be as great an actress as she believed Eve to be. Now it is 2012 and Sophie is an actress. Her movie choices are very similar to the ones that Eve made.
Sophie is getting tired of making the same type of movie, always being the girlfriend that gets hurt in the end. Sophie would like to make a movie about Eve's life, but her agent doesn't think this would be a good career move. Sophie is making a movie where she believes that Eve would be be perfect to play the part slated for an older actress. Sophie sets out to try and get a hold of any one who could possibly get her in touch with Eve.
Sophie's big problem right now is that someone is stalking her. This person has gotten into her home and has damaged her property. The stalker has left several messages that have threatened Sophie's life. The police have no clues as to who this might be. Sophie will not let this deter her attempt to find Eve.
In the mean time, we find out that Eve's sister, who she thought she had lost in a drowning accident is alive and well. Eve's parents had put her sister Rose in a home, feeling she was not the same after the accident. Now Eve and her sister Rose live together in a small England town.
Harriet Evans combines the story line of two old movies, it reminds me of The Two Faces of Eve, and the other one, which has been made over several times, is A Star is Born. I really enjoy both of these movies, so it was really interesting how she combined them to write NOT WITHOUT YOU.
