Those who have read my reviews on craft books know that one of the elements that I judge these books on is how many projects not only capture my interest and attention but how many I would actually make. The prettier the books photos the better and in my opinion GREAT LITTLE GIFTS TO KNIT is lovely enough for a coffee table book. But don't stop there. Jean Moss has compiled beautiful pages filled with thirty items any of which would truly be a welcome gift to a lucky recipient.
Off the top of my head I could easily see making several items. Jean Moss grades each item with two critical conditions to meet -- skill level and something she calls Time to Knit. Obviously we all are familiar with skill levels and there are enough projects in each ranging from beginner to advanced to please any knitter.
Time to Knit is ingeniously segregated into basically three conditions: weekend, day or vacation -- again obvious to crafters. So if you are looking for a really quick item check out the TTK day group. Going on a vacation and want to tackle a more detailed project then select one from the TTK vacation group.
In the rear of the book you will find a pictorial index along with specifics on yarns used in the books projects. As most of these are UK products (most readily available in the states) it is nice to know the qualities of these yarns to make substitution easier.
Okay so here are the four projects that made it to my to do list. Froufrou Fingerless Gloves (weekend) and just gorgeous, Galaxy Beret (day) chunky variegated yarn -- can it get any better. Number three of my list is Kittens Paw Shawl (vacation) just one look and I was hooked -- no pun intended here. And last but certainly not least was the Wensleydale Tea Cozy which is absolutely frivolous but beyond beautiful for a very thoughtful hostess gift.
There is something for everyone including babies, women, men, pet and home.
One of the details that I loved was the inclusion of photos of many of the items in several color ways which has always helped me in the selection process. It always helps to see how something looks in different color combinations and this is something Jean Moss has seen to.
And in deference to the different skill levels required for these projects Moss includes little tips on how to perhaps dummy down to a lower level of knitting and yet receive a most beautiful result.
Overall GREAT LITTLE GIFTS TO KNIT by Jean Moss fits all my qualifications for a well written and illustrated knitting book. This is surely a book that will be referred to again and again when looking for ideas for that little something special to make.
Today's knitters are avidβand busy. Although they love to
knit for friends and family, and enjoy trying out new
patterns and stitch techniques, they're constantly faced
with the challenge of finding enough time to complete their
projects. Great Little Gifts to Knit solves this problem.
Jean Moss, author of Sweet Shawlettes, has designed 30 fun,
fresh, beautiful patterns that incorporate traditional
knitting techniques from all over the world: from Fair Isle
and Aran knits to Peruvian intarsia patterns and Japanese
shadow knitting techniques. Beautiful, clever, and, most of
all, quick to knit, these projects offer knitters a chance
to learn and experiment with new techniquesβall in projects
that can be made in less than a weekend.
