Be warned -- by page forty four you are absolutely hooked
into this well written romantic mystery.
Jayne Ann Krentz does not mince words so if she includes
details pay attention. RIVER ROAD is basically a cold case
mystery built around a very interesting eclectic group of
characters. Some endearing, others definitely not. All
of this is done quite purposefully by the very talented
author who has entertained us all for many years building a
solid base of devoted fans. Krentz has mastered the art of
quick witted intelligent dialog and sets a vivid scene.
There's no denying the attraction between Lucy Sheridan and
Mason Fletcher. It had briefly ignited thirteen years ago
when it seems the stage was set for what is now being
uncovered in the present. Upon her return to Summer River
after the accidental death of her Aunt Sara and Sara's
friend Mary it seems Lucy is making quite a few heads turn
and the gossip in this small town is ratcheted up high.
That's what catches Mason's attention, this interest in
Lucy, it's almost palatable, certainly curious and for an
ex-cop turned investigator it's interesting to say the
least.
Thirteen years ago Lucy's first and lasting impression of
Mason was that of her self-appointed guardian angel. Now
back in Summer River that has become much more than just an
impression.
Lucy and Mason team up to get to the bottom of the shared
past of many Summer River residents. It all started with
that party thirteen years ago which initiated a series of
events, deaths and accidents that eerily seemed connected to
what had appeared to be a teenage wild party. Lots of kids
were on the invitation list for the night but for some their
lives would take an unexpected turn. That night would
foretell of several tragedies. That night would haunt those
kids forever. That night was slated to bring about the
destruction of the futures of several people who had
seemingly been randomly selected for the invitation list.
But as time would tell and as details unfold nothing was
random.
The list of suspects is huge and guilt is spread over many
residents of this small town at whose center were two
wealthy influential family's the Colfax and Brinker's. No
one is above suspicion and the more Lucy delves into the
identity of the responsible person for the "accidental"
death of her aunt Sara the more dangerous it becomes for
Lucy and candidly any one she is confiding in.
It's a wild ride filled with many "oh no" moments when you
want to grab into the pages and sound a warning. Keep in
mind it's always about money or revenge.
By the way you are going to fall madly in love with Mason
Fletcher, you can't help it and perhaps then you can
understand why Lucy is so taken with this man even though
she swears she has commitment issues and is constantly
reminding Mason that he is sorely lacking in communication
skills. One of the best couples ever.
RIVER ROAD is infused with inspired dialog and just the
right amount of suspense. Jayne Ann Krentz has simply done
it again. RIVER ROAD is a true page turner that will keep
you engrossed through to the very end. It is sure to
challenge even the best arm chair sleuth.
SUMMARY
From the New York Times–bestselling author of
Dream Eyes and Copper Beach, a
brand-new quintessential Jayne Ann Krentz romance. It’s been thirteen years since Lucy Sheridan was in Summer
River. The last time she visited her aunt Sara there, as a
teenager, she’d been sent home suddenly after being dragged
out of a wild party—by the guy she had a crush on, just to
make it more embarrassing. Obviously Mason Fletcher—only a
few years older but somehow a lot more of a grown-up—was the
overprotective type who thought he had to come to her
rescue. Now, returning after her aunt’s fatal car accident, Lucy is
learning there was more to the story than she realized at
the time. Mason had saved her from a very nasty crime that
night—and soon afterward, Tristan, the cold-blooded rich kid
who’d targeted her, disappeared mysteriously, his body never
found. A lot has changed in thirteen years. Lucy now works for a
private investigation firm as a forensic genealogist, while
Mason has quit the police force to run a successful security
firm with his brother—though he still knows his way around a
wrench when he fills in at his uncle’s local hardware store.
Even Summer River has changed, from a sleepy farm town into
a trendy upscale spot in California’s wine country. But
Mason is still a protector at heart, a serious (and
seriously attractive) man. And when he and Lucy make a
shocking discovery inside Sara’s house, and some of
Tristan’s old friends start acting suspicious, Mason’s
quietly fierce instincts kick into gear. He saved Lucy once,
and he’ll save her again. But this time, she insists on
playing a role in her own rescue . . .
