Mystery

THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR is Book 8 in this author's Ghost Hunter mystery series. In this mystery, psychic medium M.J. Holliday gets a surprise visit from her ex-boyfriend Steven. His fiancé's brother in is a lot of trouble, the kind of trouble only somebody like M.J. and her team can help with. It seems sort of appropriate that I get back into this series with this book. The last book I read was when M.J. was still dating Steven. After reading THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR, I remembered all the things I originally liked about this series. It combines some elements of a paranormal cozy with spine-tingling suspense and thrills. I like that M.J. has a good support system with her good buddy Gilley, dreamy boyfriend Heath, and affectionate parrot Doc. I also like that, even with super scary ghost stuff going on, there are occasional light moments of humor and romance. After finishing this book, I also think that Heath is a better fit as a romantic partner for M.J. than Steven was. Heath is a psychic medium as well and that fact adds to the story. I always liked Steven, but Heath just makes more sense. The ghost in this story is truly evil. One of the terrifying things about him is that he's not confined to a single location. I got goose bumps reading some scenes. I normally don't go in for suspense-filled mysteries, but when combined with all the other elements, I really enjoyed THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR. I enjoyed following M.J. and her team investigate and try to stop others from being harmed by the evil spook. I was worried at first that there were too many roadblocks preventing them from properly looking into the case, but they still managed to get the job done. I plan on hunting down the previous books in this series I haven't read yet, and look forward to the next one when it comes out.

SUMMARY

On a well-deserved hiatus from the ghoulish grind of their TV show, Ghoul Getters, psychic medium M. J. Holliday, her boyfriend, Heath, and her best friend, Gilley, are back home in Boston. But there’s no rest for the weary ghost busters. M. J.’s ex comes to her for help—his fiancée’s brother Luke seems haunted by a sinister spirit. The crew sets up surveillance cameras to watch for the possessive poltergeist while Luke is sleeping. But when he goes outside in the middle of the night and returns hours later covered in blood, they are all very concerned—especially when the news reports the murder of a young woman in the neighborhood. Now M. J., Heath, and Gilley must remain self-possessed as they try to stop a wicked ghost whose behavior is anything but neighborly.
