Diana Reyes, a suspended special agent for the F.B.I., is caught between two worlds. Her lover Ryder Latimer is a vampire and during a botched raid, part of which caused her suspension, her body was contaminated by Ryder's blood and it has slowly been killing her. While friends and Ryder work to save her she is torn between a promise she made to her dying father and her new love. She has to figure out how TO LOVE AND SERVE.
Assistant Director in Charge, Jesus Hernandez, asks for her help much to Ryder's displeasure, because he feels the ADIC has done little to get her badge back. As Diana is drawn slowly back into her world, Ryder is pulled into his with a Slayer killing off young vampires. They have a treaty with Slayers, only vampires who kill can be killed and only those sanctioned. These are unsanctioned and that makes this slayer a rogue and very dangerous ... not just to his kind but also to humans.
TO LOVE AND SERVE is an intriguing twist on action/police storylines. Author Caridad Pineiro gives us cops and special agents with the hidden element of vampires and slayers who are still a secret from most humans. You will be quickly thrown into the lives of Diana and Ryder and you don't have to have read any other book as the background information is given in perfect little bites. After some research I found that this is a republishing of the author's The Calling, vampire series (now called Reborn). It is a stand alone that will have you reading until you get to the last page and wanting more. I will certainly be looking for the next one.
