Romance Historical

ONE ROGUE TOO MANY by Samantha Grace is Book 1 in the Rival Rogues series. This book follows the twists and turns in the love story between Anthony Keaton, Earl of Ellis and Lady Gabrielle Forest. The prologue tells the tale of how young Gabby was infatuated with Anthony -- her older brother's good friend. It was a poignant little vignette showing how she first felt rejected by him, and it's this first sting of rejection which makes her doubt his affections in later years. The main story takes place years later when they are both adults, and Anthony is a widower with a daughter. There is no villain in this story, but the bulk of the conflict comes from miscommunication between the two. This being the case, I found it very helpful that the story was told from the point of view of both the hero and the heroine. It is very obvious how attracted Gabby and Anthony are, and how much love they have always had for each other. In a way, a lack of trust holds them both back from being together. Anthony doesn't totally trust Gabby to reveal all of his family secrets, and Gabby doesn't totally trust Anthony to always be there for her. All of the characters in this story seemed to have a very strong sense of family. Gabby's family becomes Anthony's surrogate family after the death of his father. Gabby's brothers and sisters are all very close and are very supportive and protective of each other. One of the things that I found endearing about Sebastian was his obvious love and consideration for his sister. In addition to the romance between the two main characters, I loved the rival for Gabby's affections -- Baron Sebastian Thorne. The author was able to take what could have been just a stock character and instead gave him depth and complexity. I very much look forward to reading more about this character in a future book. I also look forward to reading about Sebastian's sister Eve and am intrigued about what little there was said about her situation. This was a very romantic story with great supporting characters in addition to the hero & heroine. ONE ROGUE TOO MANY is the first book I've read by this author but I really enjoyed it and plan on trying more.

SUMMARY

From the Betting Book at Brook's Gentleman's Club:

Wager: £2,000 that Lord Ellis will throw the first punch when he discovers Lord Throne is wooing a certain duke's sister. All Bets Are Off When the Game is Love

Lady Gabrielle is thrilled when Anthony Keaton, earl of Ellis, asks for her hand in marriage. She's not so pleased when he then leaves the country and four months pass without a word. Clearly, the scoundrel has changed his mind and is too cowardly to tell her. There's nothing to do but go back on the marriage mart...

When Anthony returns to town and finds his ultimate rival has set sights on Gabby, his continual battle of one-upmanship with Sebastian Thorne ceases to be a game. Anthony is determined to win back the woman who holds his heart--but he's not expecting Gabby herself to up the stakes...

Great review! I have read Samantha' previous books & I would recommend them, too! Looking forward to this one.
