The Styx have infested England, but they have plans that go
far beyond the borders of England. Normal citizens from all
over the world are attempting assassinations on the world's
leaders. The only connection is that they've all been to
England recently and all had organs removed and replaced
with undetectable explosives. With the boarders closing,
there is nowhere left to run and no one willing to help a
nation that is seemingly a hub of terrorist activity. Will,
Chester, and Elliot must figure out the purpose of this new
Styx threat and why the Styx would want to isolate the
entire British Isles from the outside world before the
situation spirals out of control.
SPIRAL by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams is the fifth
book in the bestselling Tunnels series. This is the
first
book from the Tunnels series that I've read. I plan
on
finding all of the previous books so I can give them to my
daughter. SPIRAL is packed with action, adventure, vivid
descriptions that completely creep me out, and an amazing
plot that went way beyond what I expected. SPIRAL is, quite
simply, fun to read. Illustrations are tucked like hidden
gems throughout the novel which I love. I'd spend a few
minutes studying the picture, looking for clues to the story
and appreciating the artwork.
SPIRAL is a pretty lengthy book at 440 pages, but it reads
quickly and shouldn't be daunting. The prose is
straightforward, descriptive, and fast. The story is easy to
pick up even if you're new to the series like I was. Gordon
and Williams carefully lay out all the crucial information
in the beginning which does make the first few chapters feel
a bit slow, but once the world is established the pace
speeds up considerably. By the midpoint of the book I didn't
want to stop reading. The world is intriguing to say the
least and creepy enough to entice the readers that love
those elements in their stories. There is a description of
the Styx women that seriously made me feel queasy when I
read it. That is wonderful writing and I applaud the authors
for their talent and for knowing exactly what will engage
their readers.
Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams delivers superb action,
terrifying opponents, and a plot that will keep the reader
turning the pages as fast as they can. SPIRAL is fantastic
fun. I can't wait to see what is in store for the conclusion
of this series.
