Already deeply in debt, George Upperton learns that his
mistress is with child and she and her aggressive brother
want him to pay her a hefty compensation. George flees with
his family to his newlywed friend Revelstoke's house party
where he hopes to get a loan or hustle the other guests for
blunt. Out for a stroll on the beach, George encounters a
barefoot Isabelle Mears and her little boy, Jack.
Isabelle was ruined by a gentleman like George and has
fallen out of good society. Thus she will have nothing to
do with a man like him or any man for that matter. Isabelle
and her son hide away from the world in a small cottage on
the outskirts of the village near Revelstoke's manor.
When Jack is kidnapped by men unknown, Isabelle and George
join forces to get him back.
A MOST DEVILISH ROGUE by Ashlyn Macnamara is a historical
romance set in regency England. A MOST DEVILISH ROGUE is
the sequel to A MOST SCANDALOUS PROPOSAL. Macnamara's
descriptions are eloquent and flowery, sometimes they are a
bit over the top though. Isabelle is a little bit too
stereotypical in her "jilted maiden against the world" type.
George on the other hand is refreshing. While he is the
typical flawed with serious problems hero he isn't all dark,
stoic, and broody. George is witty, his defense mechanisms
cause him to make light of everything, hiding what he
really feels. Jack is a fun addition to the story and he is
the catalyst of most of Isabelle and George's interactions.
I will say that there seem to be a lot of obvious puns in
the last names of the characters.
A MOST DEVILISH ROGUE starts off as a fun and decent
historical romance and in the sea of historical romances I
wasn't sure I'd pick up another Ashlyn Macnamara. But the
writing definitely improves as the story goes on. I found
myself quickly flipping to the next chapter at each
chapter's end. A MOST DEVILISH ROGUE is a worthwhile read.
Fans who adore Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina
Jeffries will savor Ashlyn Macnamara’s sensual new novel,
which proves that two hearts are better than one.
Years ago, when Isabelle Mears was still a young
miss too infatuated to know better, she surrendered her
innocence to a dishonorable man. Though ruined and cast out
from society, she has worked hard to shelter her
illegitimate son, Jack. Having sworn off men in her quiet
but dignified life, Isabelle is unprepared for the deep
longing that rips through her when a handsome stranger
rescues her rambunctious six-year-old from the pounding
ocean surf.
George Upperton is a man in
trouble with debts, women, and a meddling family. He is, by
all accounts, the last gentleman on earth Isabelle should be
drawn to. But loneliness is a hard mistress, and caution
gives way to desire . . . even though Isabelle is convinced
that happiness can’t be found in the arms of such a devilish
rogue. Only when Jack is kidnapped does Isabelle discover
the true depth of George’s devotion—and how far a good man
will go to fight for the woman whose love is all that
matters.
