What a stormy start to a marriage! All the happy newlyweds had wanted was a nice peaceful honeymoon after their original planned honeymoon had been delayed and NYPD Captain Daniel Sullivan thought he had a great solution all worked out. When the powerful and wealthy New York City Alderman Brian Hannan offered them a chance to stay off-season at his estate in Newport, Rhode Island, Daniel had eagerly accepted. As they arrive in the dark of night and after battling their way on foot in the fury of a storm, Molly Sullivan, (formerly Murphy) is not overly impressed with the hospitality. Yet, her curiosity is aroused. In a flash of lightening, Molly is sure she saw the face of a child in an upper window, but no one answers the door. The early morning sun didn't diminish all the stormy looks they encounter and to top it off, their host and the man they expect to explain away all the problems is found dead on the bottom of the ocean side cliff in the very same place his lovely granddaughter Colleen had been found years ago. Was this an accident or a wilful murder? Why are they now being included as suspects? HUSH NOW, DON'T YOU CRY is the eleventh book in Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy Mysteries. Even if you haven't read the series before, (but I know you will likely search them out now that you have discovered them), HUSH NOW, DON'T YOU CRY also reads well as a stand-alone whodoneit. Molly is an easy character to love. She is a feisty and headstrong heroine and has even run her own detective agency in New York City after her harrowing start as a penniless Irish immigrant fresh off the boat. Now in 1903, Molly is caught between her desire to please her husband who she loves dearly and her own need for justice as she chafes at the restrictions placed on her in her expected role as a wife and a female. With her accurate eye for historical detail, Rhys instantly pulls you into the time and place of this interesting period at the start of the 20th century and her secondary characters realistically reflect the attitudes and behaviours of the times. HUSH NOW, DON'T YOU CRY is an intriguing multi- layered mystery with lots of possible suspects, so fans of historical novels and mystery lovers are sure to enjoy this very unusual honeymoon adventure and be happy in the knowledge that more Molly Murphy mysteries are on their way!
SUMMARY
Molly Murphy, now Molly Sullivan, and her husband Daniel, a
captain in the New York Police department, have been invited
to spend their honeymoon on the Newport, RI, estate of
Alderman Brian Hannan in the spring of 1904. Molly doesn’t
entirely trust the offer. Hannan—an ambitious man—has
his eye on a senate seat and intentions of taking Tammany
Hall to get it. When Hannan is found dead at the base of the cliffs that
overlook the Atlantic, Molly’s suspicions are quickly
justified, and as much as she wants to keep her promise to
Daniel that she won’t do any more sleuthing now, there
isn’t much she can do once the chase is on. Rhys Bowen’s
brilliant wit and charm are on full display in Hush Now,
Don’t You Cry, another outstanding addition to her Agatha
and Anthony award-winning historical series.
