Maggie Gerber and her friends Ginger, Claire, and Joanne all are members of the Good Buy Girls, a group of women dedicated to finding the best bargains in the area. Maggie's dream of owning a secondhand shop is starting to come to fruition, as she finalises the purchase of a space for My Sister's Closet. But rival Summer Phillips opens her own secondhand shop right across the street and Maggie knows she has to find a competitive edge.
The St. Stanley flea market gives Maggie just the opening, as Vera Madison will be selling her vintage wardrobe. Maggie wants to be there to get as much as she can, and the rest of the Good Buy Girls agree to help her. But the plan goes awry when Vera ends up dead, with the town's local doctor hovering over her body with a syringe. The good doctor claims innocence (he merely found the body and syringe), but he's clearly reluctant to tell anyone the whole story. His story gets more suspicious when his wife doesn't seem very supportive of his plight.
Maggie, his longtime bookkeeper, wants to help Dr. Franklin, but tension arises because the policeman investigating the case is also a man that Maggie once dated before he left the town to go away for college. He's back now, though, and he may be interested in Maggie once again. Or is he only using Maggie for her knowledge in the locals and their relationships with each other?
A DEAL TO DIE FOR is a great cosy with a wonderful balance of humour, tension, and romance. Maggie and the rest of the Good Buy Girls create a wonderful core group of characters who are each interesting in their own way. Some of the other key people in the town, such as Max and Dot, are so delightful that I'd love to read more about them. The mystery is intriguing and compelling; the person I suspected kept changing throughout the book because I couldn't decide who had the best motive! A DEAL TO DIE FOR is a great book, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment!
