Fiction

Kenneth Holbrook is a veteran Search and Rescue team member who has recently decided that he's tired of searching for lost people. So even though he's still quite young, he retires from this, often sad life. Now he's ready to just settle back and enjoy the outdoors the way it was meant to be enjoyed. In fact, he's up before dawn getting ready to head out on a solitary fishing trip when his phone rings.

It's his old Search and Rescue partner telling him about a family of four that has gone missing in a forest in the state of Washington. They need Ken's massive experience on board to help find this family. Ken wants to say no but he's made to feel guilty when he tries to turn it down. So he agrees to just one more mission.

Once he arrives there, he's presented with a team consisting of a young couple, a bully, an Eagle Scout, a brain, and a joker. Not the best odds but Ken takes what he's handed and starts out on a search of the forest. It's what happens to this motley crew once they enter the woods and start actively searching for the missing family that makes this a book to cause nightmares.

E. Michael Lewis has created a story that will have you staying away from hiking in the woods for quite a while, even if you've got someone willing to go with you. This story had me feeling happy that I was sitting comfortably on my bed in my safe house with my lamp on providing just the right amount of light. In LOST AND FOUND, Mr. Lewis left me not only frightened of what could actually be lurking in the woods but also made me want to know what happened next after the end of the story. There is definitely more of this story to be told and I would love know what it is.

As a dedicated fan of horror, I would count LOST AND FOUND right up there with some of the better scary tales that I've indulged in over the years. E. Michael Lewis is a name to be remembered as I do feel we'll be hearing much more from him in the future.

SUMMARY

Some things were never meant to be found. When a family goes missing in the wilds of Washington State, veteran outdoorsman Ken Holbrook agrees one last time to lead a team of teenage search-and-rescue trainees—a joker, a brain, an Eagle Scout, a cute couple and a bully—deep into the forest to find them. But their compasses point them in wrong directions, their terrain doesn’t match their maps, and their radio—their only link to the outside world—spews only static. They will soon discover that the family they are looking for is not the only thing lost in those woods. Something truly terrible waits for them. Ken and his team of misfits will have to work together to battle a relentless, faceless evil if they hope to get out of the woods alive.
