Samantha and her family are in danger from the evil ghost Nagi. The four travel in separate directions to escape Nagi and his ghostling children. Samantha, who is a skinwalker and can turn into a bear, and a seer who can send evil ghosts away, is supposed to be going to find a friend of her fathers, Bess. Instead she finds herself with Bess's son Alon. Though beautiful, Alon is not what he seems and has many secrets. Samantha realizes Alon can both help and protect her, and with a war between Nagi and her people inevitable, she could use a little of both. As Alon and Samantha try to fight for what they believe is right, they find themselves falling in love. When Samantha discovers Alon's secrets will her love be enough to keep them together, or will Alon's secrets tear them apart?
Jenna Kernan has taken Native American legends, and the classic folktale, Beauty and the Beast, to create a mysterious paranormal romance. Both the plot and setting are unique, yet the overall story is a basic one: a beautiful woman meets an ugly, yet caring beast. Samantha is a relatable character, and her challenges are ones most people face. She wants to make her family proud, and do what she thinks is best even if it leads to trouble. Alon is a typical "beast." He is a monster who is trying to be good, and finds himself lacking, and unworthy of the "beauty's" love.
The twists and the ultimate battle kept BEAUTY'S BEAST a page - turner. The romance between Alon and Samantha is both sultry and tender, and doesn't take away from the excitement. BEAUTY'S BEAST is a well - written and exciting adventure.
