Megan Hart's Nothing Else Matters ends ambiguously. Other than the central romantic thread, large parts of the storyline are left unresolved. Although the story itself is skillfully written and flows well, the adventurous and horrific sections were more vibrant and compelling for me than the sex scenes. I emphasize the 'for me'. Horror fans will definitely enjoy this take on the zombie apocalypse.
Lauren Hawkeye's Pick Me Up also ends without a concrete resolution, but it fits well with the eerie manipulative actions of the main character. The sex scenes are steamy and immediate, filled with sensory detail and the storyline leaves readers with a 'gotcha' moment that flows naturally from the author's set up. I am a huge urban fantasy fan but straight horror tends to make me shy away. Despite that, I can easily appreciate Hawkeye's skill in creating this delicately balanced and chilling tale.
Saranna DeWylde's Little Red's Big Bad is probably my favorite of HOT AND HAUNTED's three offerings. U.S. Marshal Miranda Garrick is a supreme alpha female who meets her overpoweringly sexy match in the F.B.I.'s Aden Brewster as they hunt a self-proclaimed werewolf serial killer. There were some leaps of faith and suspensions of logic required of readers, particularly those who are accustomed to reading procedural crime stories but as an erotic thriller, the story definitely works, and works well.
Overall, I think any fan of horror and erotica will find HOT AND HAUNTED a decent value for the book budget, all three authors show skill and imagination and the stories kept me entertained from first to last page.
