THE LAST RENEGADE brings Kellen Coltrane to the Pennyroyal Saloon and Hotel in the place of a hired shootist he meet and watched die on a train. This man called himself Nat Church, the name of a very famous dime novel hero, a hero that Kellen knows well. Nat had been on his way to the Pennyroyal to help out a lady named Lorraine Berry in Bitter Springs in the territory of Wyoming. Lorraine Berry had hired Nat Church, answering a newspaper advertisement, to come to Bitter Springs and protect the townspeople from the Burdick family. It seems the family was taking revenge on those who had found Isaac Burdick guilty of rape and sent him off to federal prison. Though he never made it to prison the Burdick's wanted to punish all involved and Lorraine didn't want anyone else to die because they stood up to them for her sister, Ellen.
Kellen begins to investigate the Burdick brothers using the cover that he is a writer doing stories on ranchers in the area. He is confusing to everyone, including Lorraine, because he almost seems like this writer but he also acts like a gunman. And on Kellen's part he tries but he cannot fight the growing attraction to the "Widder" Berry. And the more of her story that he hears the more protective and possessive he feels.
