This is a wonderful follow up to When Lightning Strikes.
Life is full of odd twists and turns, many out of our
control that somehow become our new normal. But what
happens when you can no longer deny that feeling that
things are very wrong. Do you search for the truth even
though you know that's going to hurt someone you really
care about? When is it right to put yourself and your needs
before everyone else? All difficult questions.
How do you explain visions of a life that don't fit your
reality? There aren't any plausible explanation why
Cheyenne sees a blonde woman and a beautiful bedroom with a
canopy bed. Chey doesn't resemble her mother Anita or her
sister Presley but shares a special bond with her sister.
They rely on each other their entire lives because they
are saddled with a mother who habitually leaves them uncared
for in most basic ways.
The only good thing Anita does is move them to Whiskey
Creek. Cheyenne builds strong friendships with a group of
men and women there. They are her support group, the
family which she needs so drastically with her
dysfunctional one. Now things are becoming even more
difficult. Anita is suffering cancer, and nearing the end,
requiring constant care and medications. Hospice helps but
the largest burden falls on Chey's shoulders. Presley is a
wild girl with drug and alcohol problems and runs with a
wild crowd.
In contrast is the respected tightly knit group of Chey's
friends. Her best friend Eve and Eve's parents practically
save Chey from the destructive path that Presley and Anita
have. Chey has secrets, even from her friends, one is she
has a crush on Gail's brother Joe. But now it appears that
she isn't the only one who has feeling for Joe. Eve has
been trying to catch his eye but he isn't taking the bait.
Eve decides to get aggressive and ask Joe out. Chey has no
choice but to support Eve. Her friendship is more
important and vital to her than any possibility of a
relationship with Joe.
Strangely enough Joe is feeling an attraction to Chey just
when a new man is gaining her attention. A man who isn't
her type. He comes from a family of brothers with a dubious
reputation in the community. Talk about town of the Amos
Brothers is of arrests,
fights and drugs. The oldest,
Dylan has the lion share of bad raps against him. Tough and
scary he is considered out of bounds for good girls
like Chey.
Dylan has had an eye on Chey for a long time. But to Chey
he is invisible. Dylan is very aware of Chey's crush on
Joe. But he is undeterred when he gets the chance to make a
pass. Surprisingly Chey finds herself attracted to this
tough guy. He totally turns her on, and she admits that
no man ever made her feel the way she does with Dylan. She
brazenly arranges to be with him whenever possible. And the
more they are together the more Chey realizes how
misunderstood and unfairly stereotyped he is.
Just when Mr. Right starts making his moves Chey finds
herself seeking out the worst possible candidate for
herself. When did Mr. Wrong become her Mr. Right. The
heart is a funny thing. It doesn't really acknowledge wrong
from right it just knows who makes the heart come alive.
Looks like Chey is going to have to make some difficult
decisions.
Just when Novak has you already rooting for a young woman
finally getting her wish of being with her dream man she
throws a very unexpected curve ball. I think I see a
pattern here where each new book I read from Novak becomes
my new favorite. And each story comes with a new character
that finds its way into my heart. Once again prepare to
fall in love with this newest visit to Whiskey Creek. This
is not the last of the Amos brothers. Lucky since they have
already won a place in my heart.
After growing up in cheap motels,
moving from town to town
with her sister and mother, Cheyenne Christensen is grateful
to be on her own.
She's grateful, too, for the friends she found once her
family settled in California.
But she's troubled by the mystery of her earliest memories,
most of which feature
a smiling blonde woman. A woman who isn't her mother.
Although Cheyenne
has repeatedly asked for explanations, the people who could
help aren't talking.
Cheyenne is set on finding answers, but without so much as a
birth certificate,
it won't be easy.
Things get even more complicated
when her closest friend
is attracted to the man Cheyenne has secretly loved for
years. For Eve's sake,
she decides to step aside — which lands her right in the
arms of Dylan Amos,
oldest and baddest of the hell-raising Amos brothers. He's
the kind of guy she's
sworn to avoid. She can't afford to make a mistake, not when
she finally has a
chance to learn who she really is and change her life for
the better. But . . . maybe there's more to Dylan than she
thought. Maybe letting him go would be
a bigger mistake.
