Dougal MacDonnell is a highland warrior who just happens to hear the thoughts of other men and sometimes has prophetic dreams. The journey from Scotland is harrowing. The prisoners are loaded up in the bottom of ships for the travel. They don't see daylight, are barely fed and are living in their filth. Dougal and his new friend John put a stop to it and become their bodyguards. Once they reach the encampment the two young men Aiden and Joseph who are small and wily begin secretly digging a tunnel to escape, they invite Dougal and John to join them.
Unfortunately, during the escape only Aiden and Dougal make it. The two journey to London where Aiden sings for their supper and then they continue on until they find a small abandoned cabin where they find a way to begin anew. Both are content and become best friends. Then one quiet day Aiden is attacked and Dougal's reality is shattered. Aiden is not a man? His best friend and companion is a woman? Glenna is terrified when she is revealed to Dougal. It has been hard to keep her secret but she feared Dougal wouldn't let her stay with him if he knew the truth.
