After all she had done in the past and the clean break she had made when she was married, the Countess of Waterston was shocked that Sir Maxwell Osgood would dare ask this of her! Yet, when Evelyn heard her beloved husband's life might be in danger, she had no choice but to comply.
After resigning as a spy from one of Britain's most enigmatic intelligence agency in 1864, Eve had been happily married to her handsome and beloved husband, the Earl of Waterston, Adrian Hadley-Attwater. What would Adrian think if he found out that she had only made him go to the ball so she could try and locate a missing file?
After his older brother Richard had died and Adrian had taken on the duties of his unexpected title, he had been very busy and respectable while carrying out his new duties. Yet, with his observant eye, he had noted a certain restlessness in his lovely wife. Was she bored and seeking a lover? Did she miss "Sir", her previous boss at the agency and his flirty little notes to her? With Max's help, could he find out at the masked ball?
They had been happy to withhold their past lives when they had married, so as to start with a fresh slate. Yet, when Lady Beryl Dunwell, a previous rival for her husband, unexpectedly choses to become Eve's friend, she makes Eve question who has benefitted the most from this arrangement? Yet, when danger threatens, would fate allow her to be with the one she loves the most?
Famous for her historical and other romances, New York Times Bestselling author, Victoria Alexander has launched a new open-ended series, "Sinful Family Secrets" centered on the Hadley-Attwater family that was first introduced in "His Mistress by Christmas". In MY WICKED LITTLE LIES a delightful and witty book, Alexander has expertly crafted a suspenseful and romantic novel with unexpected plot twists based on the premise of a happily married couple finding out more about each other!
While I loved the interplay between Eve and Adrian, I did find the testing of his wife's fidelity going on a wee bit too long. The romance and character development between another spy, Celeste DeRochette, and Sir Maxwell Osgood, the new Head of the agency is wonderful as it unfolded and provided a fugue counterpoint to what Eve and Adrian were plotting. MY WICKED LITTLE LIES is a very entertaining read that is sure to make many more fans for this creative and talented historical romance writer! Looking forward to more in this sinful family secrets series!
