Detective D.D. Warren and her team have a possible serial killer on their hands. Someone is shooting and killing pedophiles. While some might argue they got what they deserved, to D.D. they are victims of homicides that require investigation. While at one of the crime scenes, D. D. chases after someone she sees fleeing the scene. When questioned, Charlene Rosalind Carter Grant (aka Charlie) admits she was there to get a look at D.D. because Charlie expects to be dead in a few days and wants D. D. to investigate her murder. Suspicious but intrigued, D.D.'s continued questioning reveals that Charlie's two best friends were killed in the exact same way exactly one year apart. Though she's tried to drop off the grid, Charlie has spent nearly a year preparing for her confrontation with the killer because she believes she's next. D.D. finds herself investigating a series of murders and a hypothetical murder while dealing with the distraction of her wonderful baby boy and her loving partner Alex Wilson.
CATCH ME is an awesome addition to the D.D. Warren series. A must read for fans of the series, it absolutely works as a stand-alone story for anyone new to the series. Told from multiple points of view, the characters come to life and leave you wondering what's really going on up until the story's spine-tingling climax. I thoroughly enjoyed the quieter scenes of D.D. at home with her family (though a new baby who doesn't sleep creates his own drama!) as much as I was caught up with the suspense and mystery of the murder investigations. It takes a talented writer to keep me guessing until the end, and Lisa Gardner did just that.
In four days, someone is going to kill me . . .
Detective D. D. Warren is hard to surprise. But a lone
woman outside D.D.βs latest crime scene shocks her with a
remarkable proposition: Twenty-seven-year-old Charlene
Rosalind Carter Grant believes she will be murdered in
four days. And she wants Bostonβs top detective to handle
the death investigation. It will be up close and personal.
No evidence of forced entry, no sign of struggle. Charlie
tells a chilling story: Each year at 8:00 p.m. on February
21, a woman has died. The victims have been childhood best
friends from a small town in New Hampshire; the motive
remains unknown. Now only the last friend remains to count
down her final hours.
But as D.D. quickly learns, Charlie Grant has been
preparing, and she doesnβt plan on going down without a
fight. As D.D. tracks a lone gunman who is killing
pedophiles in Boston, she must also delve into the murders
of Charlieβs friends, seeking the elusive insight into who
might be stalking and killing these childhood playmates,
in the hopes of preventing whatever might come this
February 21. Just how much can she trust Charlie Grant, a
woman who by her own admission can outshoot, outfight, and
outrun anyone in Boston? Is Charlie truly in danger, or is
she hiding a truth deep within her that may turn out to be
D.D.βs biggest surprise of all? In four days, someone is
going to kill me.
But the son of a bitch has gotta catch me first.
