Catherine Coulter delivers another historical romance to her avid fans. This book however felt a little different from her prior novels. The book was still good, but it appeared that relationships were not as set in stone or developed as they have been in previous novels. The characters were interesting and easy to get to know. They were pretty well- developed as well. The reader will grow to care about what happens to them and their lives.
The strong female characters are a plus. They are funny, clever, and witty. The reader will enjoy the added pizzazz they add to the dialogue. Julian is the most interesting character due to his depth. His first wife was killed in unusual circumstances, fingers pointed to Julian despite his refusal to acknowledge any guilt. The reader will have to make up their own mind about what truly happened. He might not be quite the devil he is painted to be.
The mystery isn't quite impossible to solve. The reader will likely figure it out before the surprising end. The mystery does add to the book making it less of a strictly romantic story. There are more or less two romances in this novel. The reader will enjoy following both to their conclusion. Fans of Catherine Coulter should pick up a copy of THE PRINCE OF RAVENSCAR!
In April 1831, her grace Corinne Monroe wants her son, Lord Julian—the Smuggler—to marry her best friend’s daughter, Miss Sophie Wilkie. Julian last saw Sophie when she was twelve years old, silent, skinny, and always staring at him. However, his mother is nothing if not persuasive, and Julian reluctantly accompanies her to London to meet the young lady. And he knows that whatever happens isn’t going to be good. Lord Devlin Monroe, Julian’s nephew, is very fond of his intriguing reputation in society: he delights, he frightens, he brings on delicious shudders. He’s enjoying an extraordinarily pleasant bachelor life until Miss Roxanne Radcliffe and her niece, Miss Sophie Wilkie, appear in London society, and he suddenly finds himself wondering how he could have enjoyed midnight alone. Julian and Devlin must discover what really happened three years earlier when Julian’s wife, Lily, was found dead. If they don’t find out the truth, their lives could be ruined. And there is another, even more perfidious danger that lurks in the shadows, waiting.
