There seems to be a country song for every mood or problem -
- or at least that's what spending time at the Honky Tonk
makes you believe. Even newcomers to the bar or country
music get caught up in the messages in the songs played
nightly from the two jukeboxes.
Larissa Morley is the latest owner/barmaid at Honky Tonk --
the place to go for a good time. The place has a lot
going for it, not the least of which is the belief that each
owner is fated to meet the cowboy of her dreams. Heck it
worked that way for the past two owners. The last thing
Larissa was looking for was a cowboy, she wasn't even
looking for a man. What she was looking for she found in
Mingus -- a place she could call home.
Her former life wasn't anyone's business. She kept her true
identity hidden so it couldn't threaten the new life she
discovered with the help of a push pin and a map. Kind of
daring to start a new life on a whim, but Larissa is that
kind of gal-- independent, gutsy, and driven.
Her first encounter with Hank Wells wasn't exactly one
dreams are made of. While there was no denying that there
was something about Hank, Larissa had a niggling feeling
that he wasn't what he seemed to be. Sure, he had roots in
Mingus, but he was obviously more at home in Dallas. He as
closemouthed about his life as Larissa, and she didn't
understand why. Though she was truly attracted to Hank, he
made her self-defense alert blare.
Little does she know that Hank does have an ulterior motive
for being in Mingus. He is puzzled by his inability to
gather any information about the current owner of the Honky
Tonk. While each one is busy ferreting out information on
the other, they decide to enjoy their time together. For
Hank, spending time with Larissa is becoming more difficult.
His plan never included developing any kind of feelings for
her. He is increasingly worried that, once his real reason
for being in Mingus is revealed, Larissa is going to be mad
enough to skin him alive.
The newest story based on the people who live in this
little town and socially connect through this Honky
Tonk is packed with snappy dialog, salty language, and
little twists that make it an immensely enjoyable book. No
need to read them all, but you would definitely be remiss if
you didn't. Carolyn Brown simply has a way with words. Hell
Yeah, come along for the fun.
