With his companions Cody Fox and Brendan Vincent, Cole
Granger traveled from Victory, Texas to Washington, DC to
continue the fight against the scourge that almost destroyed
his hometown. They expected to find vampires and were
determined to wipe out the 'sickness' that was destroying
what little the Civil War was leaving behind. The last
thing they expected to find was a woman claiming to be Cody
Fox's half-sister. Now Cole will have to work with Megan at
the request of President Lincoln to stop the tide of death
from the vampires. Both of them have reasons to distrust
each other, but both also find a compelling attraction.
Heather Graham has a wonderful talent for taking bits of
history and blending them in with urban fantasy. With NIGHT
OF THE VAMPIRES, set during the Civil War, she creates an
alternate history during which our nation was divided and
watched brothers fight against each other for what they
believed in, while vampires took advantage of the great
death tolls to feed and replenish their numbers. Her
ability to take interesting little historic tidbits, such as
Mary Lincoln's declining mental state after the death of her
son, gives the fiction a more realistic hold for the reader.
The description of early Washington DC, a planned city
quickly rising out of the wetlands and farmlands of
the district, is just one of the vivid historical points
that could peak even the non-history buff's interest. Her
characters reflect the attitudes of the time, from the deep
mistrust between North and South to the realization of both
that the war will not end in the South's favor. There is
also some imagination at play with the historical facts, but
it is done very tastefully.
Aside from the historical aspects of NIGHT OF THE VAMPIRES,
the story has a nice flow and very good character
development. The romance is not too heavy, unless you take
in the prudery of the period, but even that is handled well.
This is a continuation from Night of the Wolves,
released in November of 2009. It stands well on its own,
but I recommend you read both as they are equally good reads.
As a soldier, Cole Granger fights to restore peace to a
world divided by war and evil. His extraordinary talents are
enlisted to prevent the president's horrific premonition
from becoming reality. Nothing—and no one—will stop him from
fulfilling his duty. Especially the mysterious young woman
who claims to be his comrade's sister. Enemy or ally, he
can't yet determine. But one thing he knows for certain is
that he must keep her close. Very close.
Megan Fox's quest to uncover a family secret leads her to
the center of vampire riots in West Virginia. To find the
answers she needs—and clear herself of suspicion—she must
join forces with Cole. They work undercover to bring
justice, but they can't disguise the potent attraction and
need that draw them together. Yet trust doesn't come easily
for Cole…and when Megan unearths the grim, dark truth, can
she trust him to believe her?
