Fantasy Urban

Savannah Levine, the illegitimate and orphaned daughter of dark witch Eve Levine, comes of age in Kelley Armstrong's new book WAKING THE WITCH. Armstrong gave us some tantalizing backstory on Savannah's parents in her last book, TALES OF THE OTHERWORLD, and now Eve's headstrong daughter is ready to take center stage. With Paige and Lucas out of town on a much-needed holiday, Savannah is left in charge. A case lands on her desk involving the murders of three young women and it looks like Supernaturals may be involved. Savannah finds herself in small town America with a half-demon go-between and unexpected and unwanted help from the brother of one of the victims, who is also a cop. Her client is the young daughter of another victim. Savannah is not only in way over her head, but the forest is so thick, she can't begin to see the trees...or the big picture. Dark magic is brewing and our girl is pretty much on her own and in harm's way. When things finally come to a head, Savannah will have to stand on her own and prove herself -- or die trying. Suspenseful and unrelenting, WAKING THE WITCH is a strong entry in the Otherworld series. It's no wonder Armstrong runs at the head of the pack of urban fantasy authors, she puts out one good book after another and keeps readers involved and interested in her universe. Savannah has always been an intriguing secondary character, and it's great to see her come into her own and shine.

SUMMARY

The orphaned daughter of a sorcerer and a half-demon, Savannah is a terrifyingly powerful young witch who has never been able to resist the chance to throw her magical weight around. But at 21 she knows she needs to grow up and prove to her guardians, Paige and Lucas, that she can be a responsible member of their supernatural detective agency. So she jumps at the chance to fly solo, investigating the mysterious deaths of three young women in a nearby factory town as a favour to one of the agency's associates. At first glance, the murders look garden-variety human, but on closer inspection signs point to otherworldly stakes. Soon Savannah is in over her head. She's run off the road and nearly killed, haunted by a mystery stalker, and freaked out when the brother of one of the dead women is murdered when he tries to investigate the crime. To complicate things, something weird is happening to her powers. Pitted against shamans, demons, a voodoo-inflected cult and garden-variety goons, Savannah has to fight to ensure her first case isn't her last. And she also has to ask for help, perhaps the hardest lesson she's ever had to learn.
