Charlotte "Charlie" McNally, a celebrity and toast of
Boston television, is a long-term investigative reporter.
Charlie's mom, soon-to-be Lorraine Carpenter McNally
Margolis, is demanding Charlie's attention while having
extensive cosmetic surgery performed prior to her
wedding.
Charlie and her partner/producer Franklin Parrish are given
an assignment involving Dorinda Sweeney (deadly Dorie),
who's imprisoned for the murder of her rich husband. Oliver
Rankin, executive director of the Constitutional Justice
Project, and Will Easterly, Dorinda's attorney, are
convinced her confession is false and she is innocent. This
begins a grueling investigation peppered with suspense and
danger for Charlie.
Charlie is striving to juggle the investigation, along with
her boyfriend Josh, his young daughter Penny and also
keeping her mother happy. All of this while being stalked
by a killer. Charlie envisions different scenarios of the
murder, which nearly causes her mother's death, as well as
her own, at the hands of the true killer.
Charlie is a clever, fast-thinking investigator with a
quick mind and a terrific imagination. Her visions of the
murder change throughout the investigation, but leave her a
hero and "on the top" in the end. Her escapades are
exciting and filled with lots of puzzle solving. This is
the second Charlotte McNally novel in this cleverly written
series by Hank Phillippi Ryan. I found the plot very
interesting, which made this a fast reading, fast-paced
action thriller, yet filled with humor. I look forward to
reading the other books in this series.
New evidence in an old murder case could set a convicted woman free. Who better to crack the story than Boston's own version of Brenda Starr? Unfortunately, the prime source won't talk, the attorney general is trying to block the investigation, and the more Charlotte snoops around, the more people turn up dead!
An extended visit from her persnickety mother isn't helping. And Josh, the incredibly sexy new love of her life, may be the picture of perfection, but that includes a close-up of a prickly preteen who's not keen on sharing her daddy with Charlotte.
What's a star reporter to do? If anyone can pull it together it's Charlotte, but she'd better hurry, because someone wants her nose out of their news--for good.
