Seeking to move as fast as she could on as little as she
can and only weeks away from her due date, Darcy Rhodes
tries to outrun a snowstorm to get to her mother's in
Indiana. Things associated with her mom usually didn't
work out and this was no different. After smashing into
the guardrail going downhill on the mountainous road,
Darcy's hopes for support were now as deflated as the
airbag on the passenger side of the car. Needing to pee
and feeling the pain of early contractions, her only hope
was to pray and hope God was listening.
The message did get through loud and clear. Kind and good-
natured Garret Tulane, the Hospital Administrator for the
small town of Beauty, Tennessee saw the snow encrusted car
and stopped to see if anyone was there. With little choice
but to trust him, Darcy quickly found comfort in this
modern knight in shiny armour -- or at least, a Cadillac
SUV with snow tires!
Thanks to the tight fisted policies of Harold Pierson,
Garret's boss, Darcy was released from the hospital at one
in the morning. Like poor Mary going to Bethlehem, she too,
now had a babe in waiting with "no room at the inn." Yet,
despite being as good as engaged to Jocelyn, his boss'
daughter, Garret didn't feel comfortable leaving Darcy in
the lurch and offered up his home to her.
His life is a luxury compared to hers and with each passing
kindness, Darcy realizes that she would love to be with
this handsome, hardworking man who would take the time to
laugh with her as he strove to make it easier for her to
stay in Beauty. Yet, how could she have a chance compared
to the beautiful and talented Jocelyn who seemed just
perfect for Garret? Besides, after being burned by love
and carrying another man's child, Darcy preferred to be
realistic and not live on false hopes that only got dashed
by others.
For his part, Garret's best friend, Tobias Richardson,
seemed to be just as angry as Harold was by Garret's delay
in giving Jocelyn the engagement ring he had bought but not
used. Why did Tobias care so much when he had never gotten
along with Jocelyn or her father?
Setting the stage for a new series on the Tulanes of
Tennessee, Kay Stockham has spun a terrific lead in story
with an intriguing double love triangle that is
captivating, yet realistic. Having experienced myself "a
somewhat alike, but different" circumstance, I felt the
author did an amazing job of capturing the hopes, fears and
ambivalence of the pregnant mom along with pulling out the
emotional needs of the rest of the characters. I just
loved the grandmas and you will too! Enjoy this
heartwarming story!
Garret Tulane is Darcy Rhodes's personal knight in shining
armor. Not only did he rescue her from being stranded in
the middle of a snowstorm, but he's also given her a place
to stay. His close family ties and his caring support
create the secure home life she wants to give her unborn
child.
That security is an illusion, however. Despite the growing
closeness between Darcy and Garret, she knows he has
obligations and commitments that don't include her—or
another man's baby. But feeling as she does, when the time
comes, will she be able to walk away?
