Elspeth MacArthur is the child a Highland lad and Fairy
lass, but it was her grandfather who raised her from the
time she was a babe. The agreement made was that she would
join her parents in Fairy on her twenty-first birthday
unless she has met and married her true love. Donal
MacArthur, Elspeth's grandfather, is a renown weaver of
Scottish plaids partly in thanks to Fey folk enhancing his
natural abilities and the speed of his weaving. Donal is
further connected to the Fey because of a tithe he pays
every seven years, but what the Fey truly want is their
treasure back. A treasure that no one knows the location of
or exactly what it might be.
It is the gift her mother bestowed before relinquishing her
child, the gift of Second Sight, that unlocks the door to
Elspeth's future. While in Edinburgh awaiting her turn to
meet King George, Elspeth is introduced to Viscount James
MacCarran who will usher her into the King's presence. She
becomes memorable to James when she blurts out to Sir
Walter Scott knowledge of his secretly published writings
and she accurately describes his current work. As Sir Scott
is a friend of his family, James knows the truth of her
statements and wants to know how she discovered this
information. When he takes her behind the large plant, it
is to ask her to explain herself. Not to mention he is
taken with her wit, her charm, and her beauty; the kiss
they share isn't too shabby either.
Just a few weeks later, James takes up residence in his new
Highland home as Lord Struan and Elspeth again with her
grandfather on the neighboring land. When Elspeth is caught
by a torrential downpour on Struan lands in the time of the
fairy riding, it was exactly what the couple needed to
begin their unique, and sometimes bumpy, courtship. A
significant number of those bumps come from of James
refusing to believe in the Fey folk. Yet it is Elspeth's
fairy gift that shows her the memories of hurt and sadness
that James keeps hidden from the world. Will this gift be
the key to saving them both?
This could be labeled as Historical Romance because it
happens in 1822 or it could be labeled as Paranormal
Romance because it has magical beings, but it would be best
just to say it's a very good story. The characters are all
like-able and all the interwoven storylines are well-
balanced. As James has three siblings, this could also be
the start of a series. Wouldn't that be nice?
