As Valen wages an inner battle of redemption, a more
vicious battle goes on outside his walls. Osriel, the
bastard prince of Evanore, and the priestess Sila Diaglou
both want Valen's allegiance. Although not sure which is
the lesser of two evils, Valen's knows he must choose, for
he fears that both the world of man and the angel-like
Danae are facing dark days. Valen means well, but still
controlled by his appetites, he's easily manipulated by the
fanatics who would utilize his gifts for their own ends.
Carol Berg's BREATH AND BONE keeps its focus firmly
on the characters and themes of religion, redemption,
growth and choice. An excellent read, but not a fast and
furious one. It takes its time with Valen and his world. A
satisfying sequel and end to the series (the first book in
the duet, FLESH AND SPIRIT, came out May 2007).
As the land of Navronne sinks deeper into civil war and
perilous winter, everyone wants to get their hands on the
rebellious sorcerer Valen-a murderous priestess, a prince
who steals dead men's eyes, and even the Danae guardians,
whose magic nurtures the earth and whose attention could
prove the most costly of all. Addicted to an enchantment
that turns pain into pleasure-and bound by oaths he refuses
to abandon-Valen risks body and soul to rescue one child,
seek justice for another, and bring the dying land its
rightful king.
